E? WHAT FACTORS LED TO THE SALEM WITCH TRIALS? WHAT DOES 17TH CENTURY SALEM HAVE TO DO WITH THE 20TH CENTURY COLD WAR?
1. 1st, 4th Block
a. IR Time (10 min)
b. Puritans, Salem, and The Cold War
i. Students do research and take notes on the following:
1. What is the Cold War of the mid to late 1900s?
2. What is communism and why is America so opposed to it?
3. Who was Senator Joseph McCarthy and what was most notable about his career?
4. What is the connection between Salem and McCarthy?
ii. Students form groups and share information. Any info a student missed should be added as the group discusses.
iii. The Crucible (brief lecture)
1. Western world is afraid that communism could come in and take over the world (United States).
2. US loves democracy, money, and freedom too much to let the communist powers take over.
3. Because of fear, some in government get paranoid about possible spies working within the government and in prominent jobs (that have influence) across the country.
4. McCarthy starts his campaign against any “suspicious” person in order to sniff out the communist spies.
5. Lots of people became targets. To get out of trouble, just point the finger. If you didn’t point the finger or confess, then you were guilty.
