  3. To improve the conditioning of team members with onoff-the-court cross-training.
  4. To have fun during the season and provide a quality overall experience. If we work together and respect each other we can all improve and have a good time doing it.
  5. To win Eastern League Championship and advance in the CIF post-season tournaments.
  1. Team Selection

Point Loma HS Tennis team will field a Varsity and JV squad, each consisting of 12 to16 players. Team selection will be based on three factors: the - of each player to contribute to the overall “team atmosphere”; the athletic ability of each player to perform at an acceptable standard at practices and in the Eastern Leagueand non-league matches; and the dedication of each player to the improvement of her tennis playing skills.

  1. Expectations of Athletes
  1. Attendance: Players are expected to attend all practices and remain courtside with teammates until the completion of every match. Occasionally, medical appointments, school related functions or other activities require the student to be absent from practice. When that occurs, players are expected to personallycontact the coaching staff no later than 24 hours beforethe next practice/match with details of the absence. In addition, unexpected events or sickness may occur and again players are expected to inform the coaching staff as soon as possible. Contact means either in person or by phone call/text message. Players with outside professional instruction may miss an occasional practice. Leaving matches or practices early for work is discouraged.
  2. Player Conduct: PLHS athletes are expected to conduct themselves in a respectful manner at all times. Players shall refrain fromdisrespectfulbehavior such as racquet throwing, taunting opponents and foul, profane and abusive language at all times. Any physical, verbal or cyber abuse of teammates or opponents, whether isolated or continuous, will not be tolerated and is a violation of SDUSD code. The use of cell phones during practices and matches is not allowed. We expect our student-athletes to be courteous at all times to coaches, school officials, opponents, spectators and teammates.
  3. Match Attire: The team uniform is required at all home and away Eastern League/CIF SDmatches. Players are expected to bring a freshly laundered uniform, shoes, socks and racquets to every match. Remember: our players represent Point Loma High School and their appearance and attire should reflect a positive attitude of themselves and PLHS.
  4. Punctuality: All practices and home matches will be held at the Peninsula TennisCenter(PTC) at Robb Field Recreation Area in Ocean Beach. There is no excuse for tardiness and players repeatedly arriving late for practices or matches will be subject to disciplinary action such as removal from the starting lineup and/or non-participation in the next team match (see Academics).
  5. Transportation: For away matches and practices, team members must be transported by private vehicles from school to PTC and away matches. Players can personally drive, accept rides with other students or from the parents of teammates. It is San Diego Unified School District policy that students with a Provisional California License cannot transport other students to and from practices or to away matches without the written consent of both sets of parents and the school Principal. Members of the coaching staff will meet on campus to co-ordinate the assignment of players to each driver prior to leaving for an away match. Due to the number of courts at each site, only 12 players (selected by the coaching staff) will travel to all away matches.
  6. Academics: Players competing in any after-school program quickly realize that team practices and matches could encompass anywhere from 2-4 hours a day. Players are expected to be organized enough to plan for classes and study sessions during non-practice hours. Players are expected to keep the coach informed of any academic situations that require missing practices or matches prior to th
  7. e schedule date. A 2.0 GPA and Satisfactory Citizenship grades are required to compete on the tennis team.
  8. Team Ladder: The Singles & Doublesladders will be set by the results of preseason challenges and regular season match play. Players may have the opportunity to move up the roster (including moving from JV to Varsity) with challenge matches during the season. The final decision of the team lineup is ultimately that of the coaching staff.
  9. Team Captains: Candidates for Team Captain will be nominated by the coaching staff and generally will be one or more of the Seniors on the team.Captains are expected to show exceptional character, on-and-off-the-court leadership and commitment to team goals. Team Captains will be expected to perform a variety of duties assigned by the coaching staff.
  10. Alcohol and Drugs: Alcohol and drugs are performance detractors, not performance enhancers. The use of alcohol and/ornon-prescription drugs by any student is strictly prohibited. Following PLHS Guidelines, if anyone on the team is suspected or engages in the use of alcohol or non-prescription drugs, the entire team may undergo drug testing.
  11. Financial Obligations: The Tennis teams have a variety of expenses that are not covered by the school budget. To help supplement our budget and pay for these items, all players are expected to participate in Team Fundraisers. In addition, supporterswill be asked to join the Tennis Team Booster Club to help offset the cost of team uniforms and other team expenses.
