PUGET SOUND MODEL BOAT CLUB

APRIL 2004

DAFFODIL REGATTA, SUNDAY, APRIL 18 – LAKE WAUGHOP

Our club’s Daffodil Regatta will be held next Sunday, the 18th. There will be two sections of racing: The 2004 Mini Daffodil Outboard Championships in the morning and Open Racing in the afternoon. Four classes will be offered for the M.D.O.C. – A Stock, A Mod, B Stock, and B/C Mod. Why B/C Mod you ask? Well, seems Uncle Jerry has a HTB 360 with a piped K&B 67 that needs some time on the water. See, if you run the race you can run what you want. Prizes for the M.D.O.C. will be gift certificates from Hobby Town. $25 for 1st, $15 for 2nd, and $10 for 3rd in all classes. The M.D.O.C. format will feature a 10-lap race with a release from the beach start. 30 seconds will be allowed for starting for the beach release. Boats will run out to a scatter buoy, around the right corner and then the 10-lap race will begin with the crossing of the start/finish buoy. Any boat not started for the beach release will be provided 1 additional minute to start and enter the race once the field has started the race by launching towards the left corner. Regular heat scoring points will be awarded. Three rounds will be run. Any class of 10 or more will run a final and a connie. The connie will be only 5 laps. A final will be 10 laps.

The afternoon class will include: Open Novice, A Open, B Open, and Wide Open (gas powered boats welcome). No charge for Open Novice, but NAMBA membership (or one day member) is required. Afternoon classes will also run three rounds. The cost is $5/Class with a $2/person charge for site rental. Pre-registration is available by using the District 8 website – namba8.com and clicking on the race registration icon. We will begin setting up at 7:30 a.m. and open water for the M.D.O.C. should begin around 8:15 a.m.

P.S.M.B.C. DISTRICT POINTS’ RACE – MAY 1 & 2 AT LAKE WAUGHOP

The second 2004 District 8 Points’ Race will be just two weeks after our Daffodil Regatta. Registration by using the District 8 website. If you register after Wednesday, April 28 you will pay double the $7 entry fee. That’s something like $14 folks. Set up both days will begin at 7:30 a.m. and Open Water to follow at 8:15 a.m.

WHAT’S BEEN HAPPENING?

With the 2004 District 8 racing season just two races (Spring Classic and Points’ Race #1), there’s appears to be some good news and bad news. First the bad news, the turnout for our D.R.8 #1 was down considerably compared to previous years. A couple of very involved model boaters have either left the area or left the sport.

However, there is good news. Our club has four new racers eager to participate in District and club racing. They are Chris Fanaris and Doug Hanson – CAD Racing (Chris and Doug), and Chad Thedoro and Dave Winterbottom who I guess could also be CAD Racing but with different first names. Maybe we’ll just reverse the letters and have DAC Racing. Chad won the B Open Class at the Spring Classic with his Seaducer 40 and Dave was third in A Mono at D.R.8#1. Chris tied for 5th place in qualifying for the A Stock final at D.R.8#1, lost the coin toss to determine who would stay in the final or have to go to the connie and didn’t win the connie. Doug made a great start in his first heat of racing in A Hydro at D.R.8#1 and then discovered the piling off the east beach was made of concrete and really hard on rigger sponson booms.

It is also great to see junior members racing. Michael Mallit is running in A Mono and A Stock, Adam Knox is running in B Stock, and Bryce Anderson is running in A Mono. Hopefully, we’ll see Adam Warren joining our junior boaters.
