Pershing Elementary

Fall 2015

Dear Pershing Parent/Guardian,

We want you to be aware that our school has made many preparations to deal effectively with emergency situations that could occur in or around our school, both during the school day and during after-hour activities. While we hope that a natural disaster or other serious incident never occurs, our goal is to be prepared for any potential emergency. Each and everyday, our first priority is to protect all students, staff, and guests from harm.

In order for our Crisis Plan/Crisis Team to be effective, we depend on the cooperation and assistance of many people, such as the police, fire department, and other local agencies. We also depend on you, as parents, to support our disaster-response efforts. Your cooperation is vital to helping us protect the safety and welfare of all students and school employees. Therefore, we ask parent to observe the following procedures:

  1. Do not telephone the school at the time of a disaster. We truly and sincerely understand and respect your concern, but it is essential that the phone system be available for emergency communications.
  2. Make sure we have emergency contact information for each of your children at all times. We must be able to contact you or your designated representative in the event of an emergency.
  3. Tune your radio to local stations for emergency announcements and status reports. Here you would likely receive instructions on where you should go and how/when you may be able to pick up your children. Our school crisis plan includes evacuation procedures (which we practice regularly) with an alternate location should we need to evacuate the school grounds. This is St. John Charismatic Episcopal Church at 5106 Miller Road. When appropriate and safe, students may be released to parents/guardians from the shelter location. Under those circumstances, we will be prepared to implement procedures for allowing us to confirm the identity of individuals who arrive to pick-up each child. When arriving to pick up your child, please make sure you have with you appropriate identification.
  4. Do not come to the school unless instructed to do so. It may be necessary to keep the streets and parking lot clear for emergency response vehicles. Again, if evacuation is required, students may be transported to a location away from school (see above).
  5. Talk to your children and emphasize how important it is for them to follow instructions from their teachers and school officials during an emergency. Please emphasize the purpose and importance of appropriate behavior during practice drills.
  6. Carefully read all information you receive from our school. You may receive updates about our school safety procedures from time to time.

We are proud that our school is a safe school, and we are doing everything possible to keep it that way. We appreciate your cooperation and support.

Your friend in education,

Mrs. Wells, Principal
