In the first reading of Deuteronomy we see that the whole law is summed up in love of God and Love of neighbour. It is not complicated or difficult to know, rather it is simple and written within us. God has given us the use of reason to discern right from wrong and the freedom of will to obey it. In the Gospel the story of the Good Samaritan illustrates that compassion and love and mercy over-rules the law. The Priest and Levite in the story were so rigid in obeying the law that they could not see that the poor man on the road in need of help was so much more important; on the other hand the Samaritan didn't question anything but immediately went to his assistance and made provision for him to be looked after when he had left. He gave his all, there were no half measures. This Jesus pointed out is loving your neighbour as yourself and sets the bar high for us to follow. In response to the question “Who is my neighbour?” Jesus is telling us our enemies are our neighbours too, in fact we are especially required to do good to those we find difficult ; He tells us “If you love those who love you , what reward will you get?” Even the tax collectors do that much.” We are all capable of turning a blind eye to helping others in case we get caught up or too involved; we can find excuses and pass the buck to suit ourselves. In today’s world there are so many people displaced by war and hunger, so many people homeless for different reasons; they are our neighbours too. Do we welcome them? How charitable are we? Have we become indifferent to their needs? They must be treated as our brothers and sisters in Christ; we can get this strength from God to speak out and be a light in our own place; we can bloom where we are planted. The Psalm tells us the poor in spirit will be lifted up by the Lord, He listens to the humble of heart. St. Paul tells us “Christ Jesus is the image of the unseen God.” We cannot know God unless we know Jesus Christ. He alone had dominion over the whole of creation and all things to be reconciled through him. We must always have hope for the world even though today people are so divided and unhappy; Christ is our hope; He is with His Church and will never leave it. He died for us.
