SUBJECT:Summer Stipends Program for 2016

Please find attached an announcement of, and a request for proposals for, Faculty Summer Research Stipends in the Humanities and Social Sciences for 2016.

I would be grateful if you would distribute this material to members of your faculty who may wish to apply. Please note that the deadlines for proposal submission to this office are noon on Monday, September 7, 2015 (for NEH awards), and noon on Thursday, October 01, 2015 (for University awards). Note also, that this is the only announcement to be made of this program for 2016, so it is important that you make your appropriate faculty aware of this potential opportunity.

THERE HAVE BEEN CHANGES IN SOME OF THE CONDITIONS AFFECTING THE SUMMER STIPENDS PROGRAM. FACULTY SHOULD READ THE REVISED CONDITIONS CAREFULLY.

Departmental Chairs may ask applicants to submit proposals to the Department for forwarding to the Committee. This will allow Chairs to evaluate proposals and suggest priorities to the Committee. This is not required, but it does allow you, as Departmental Chair to make clear any issues or circumstances the Committee should consider in evaluating proposals and making awards.

If you choose to do this, you will need to set a department deadline to receive the proposals, which, in turn, will allow your department to submit the proposals to our office by noon on Monday, September 7, for NEH awards and noon on Thursday, October 01, for UVA awards.

Submit one PDF file using this naming convention: PI last name-first initial_2016__Summer Stipends.pdf (Example: Smith-J_ 2016_Summer Stipends.pdf). Please upload your package here:, select 2016 SUMMER STIPENDSfrom the drop down menu, no later thannoon on Monday, September 7, 2015 (for NEH awards), and noon on Thursday, October 01, 2015 (for University awards). Extensions tothese respective deadlines will not be made.
