Director of Admissions

The University of Oklahoma (OU) was created by the Oklahoma Territorial Legislature in 1890 and is a Carnegie Research I doctoral degree-granting research university serving the educational, cultural, economic, and health-care needs of the state, region, and nation. Today there are more than 30,000 students at the University. The University is located in Norman, a classic college town that regularly features on national “Best Places to Live” lists, situated only twenty minutes from metropolitan Oklahoma City. OU has more than 2,600 full-time faculty members, and has 20 colleges offering 163 majors at the baccalaureate level, 157 majors at the master’s level, 81 majors at the doctoral level, 28 majors at the doctoral professional level, and 28 graduate certificates. The University’s annual operating budget is $1.5 billion. OU has many nationally and internationally recognized academic programs including meteorology, geology, petroleum engineering, entrepreneurship, ballet, and musical theatre. OU is also home to one of the most storied intercollegiate athletics programs in the nation. The Sooners boast 26 national championships in men’s and women’s sports, 251 team conference championships, and more than 800 All-Americans.

Reporting to the Vice President and Registrar, Enrollment and Student Financial Services, the Director of Admissions oversees administrative operations related to the admission of undergraduate and graduate students to the University; supervises the staff in the Admissions Office; interfaces with the University community and the public in areas related to services provided by the Admissions office; interprets policies of the University, Oklahoma State Regents for Higher Education, and federal agencies as they relate to admissions and advises upper management regarding needs and changes; communicates with other institutions concerning admission-related matters; and participates in the recruitment process in collaboration with the Office of Recruitment Services. The Director also develops office policies and procedures; prioritizes staff responsibilities in relation to admission activities and the University mission; writes and maintains procedure manuals; develops forms and publications necessary for Admissions functions; serves as liaison with users of the student database, and coordinates with Information Technology and users in analyzing needs and developing computer-related services. The Office of Admissions has an annual budget of $1.96 million, and the Director supervises a staff of 36 full-time employees.

A master’s degree and a minimum of six years of progressively responsible experience as an administrative officer in admissions, enrollment management, or other relevant leadership positions are required. The successful candidate will have exceptional knowledge of current technologies for developing and promoting effective admissions initiatives; excellent collaboration skills; exceptional communication and interpersonal skills, including the ability to speak in public; the ability to think strategically; and demonstrated skills to facilitate task/goal accomplishment in a time-sensitive environment, keeping both the big picture and operational details at the forefront. Knowledge of contemporary best practices in admissions, a demonstrated record of effective development and supervision of staff, the ability to manage multiple complex interactions, leadership, and decision-making skills are critical for this position.
