BERNARDSVILLE–Preschool Advantage, a non-profit that provides financial assistance to families for early education, has namedSaint John’s Nursery Schoolas its first partner preschool for the next school year.

Affiliated withThe Church of St. John on the Mountain, 379 Mount Harmony Road, the school offers an organized educational environment that focuses on the development of the whole child in a supportive and nurturing atmosphere.

Preschool Advantagehas provided families in Morris and Somerset counties financial assistance for high quality preschool education since 1995. The organization selects qualified programs as partner preschools. Local families demonstrating commitment to education and financial need can apply to Preschool Advantage for funding for a half day of preschool for 3 or 4 year olds.

In 2016, 71 children were funded byPreschool Advantagewith more than 1,300 tuitions paid throughout the organization’s history.

Families interested in applying for preschool funding can complete an application found atpreschooladvantage.org. Children must be 3 or 4 years old by Oct. 1, 2017, to be considered for funding for the school year beginning in September. The deadline for applications is Feb. 28.

Preschool Advantageis a non-profit organization that believes all children should have access to high quality early education. Through private donations, Preschool Advantage can select families whose children would otherwise not have the opportunity to attend preschool and make available a seat at an outstanding local school.

Educational and economic research demonstrate that the effects of high quality early education are profound and enduring. Early childhood education encourages brain development and helps build the emotional and social skills kids need in school.

Children from disadvantaged families are often developmentally behind by the age of 3. If deprived of the opportunity to attend preschool, they arrive at kindergarten with a significant achievement gap in knowledge, vocabulary and social skills, putting them at a disadvantage.

While there are federally funded programs to cover the cost of preschool for families living below the poverty line, which is $24,250 for a family of four, working families earning more have limited options. In this region, typically a quarter of families earn less than what is considered the household “survival budget.”

Preschool Advantage is dedicated to assisting families who fall into this circumstance.
