Explanatory notes
This unit standard recognises knowledge of spun yarn, it builds on the knowledge covered by Unit 19841, Demonstrateelementaryknowledge of the operations, processes and products of textile manufacturing. Other sector-specific unit standards recognise advanced knowledge of spun yarns.
Outcomes and evidence requirements
Outcome 1
Demonstrate knowledge of yarn construction.
Evidence requirements
1.1Yarn terms are defined in relation to yarn production and yarn characteristics.
Rangeyarn production – carding, gilling, combing, draft, parallelisation, twist insertion;
yarn characteristics – count (tex and metric), single twist, ply twist, S twist, Z twist, strength and extension, bulk, evenness.
Outcome 2
Demonstrate knowledge of spun yarn manufacturing processes.
Rangewoollen spinning, semi-worsted spinning, worsted spinning, open end spinning.
Evidence requirements
2.1Equipment used for yarn manufacturing processes is described in terms of function and operation.
2.2The properties and end uses of yarns used for manufacturing processes are described and compared.
Outcome 3
Demonstrate knowledge of yarn processes that follow spinning.
Evidence requirements
3.1Yarn processes are described in terms of the equipment used, and the reasons for the process.
Rangetwisting (ring twisting, 2 for 1 twisting), assembly winding, clearing, package winding, yarn scouring, yarn setting, yarn jointing.
