Disability Netball in Hertfordshire
Sport can be an extremely fulfilling activity that not only improves your fitness levels and make everyday activities easier. It can also help build confidence, leadership, team-work, improve communication and, just as important as any of these, it can be fun!Netball is a fun way to engage children and adults with disabilities, whether it is a learning disability or a physical disability; netball can provide a chance for anyone to become more active and expend some energy.
Hertfordshire are fast developing Netball in all areas, one in which is Disability. Turnford Netball Club held their annual summer disability camp this August at Millbrook School in Cheshunt Herts.
These disability camps organised by Turnford Netball Club have been running for a number of years. The camps are headed by Carole Titmuss, Turnford's Disability Coach (seen left), together with younger members.
Some young members volunteer in Coaching, Admin and helping out those who are less mobile to earn hours to go towards their Duke of Edinburgh awards. Other volunteers help out at the disability sessions as they find this experienceextremely rewarding.
“We feel that it is important for the club to give something back to the community.” –Carole Titmuss
Hertfordshire’s Netball Development Community Coach Natalie Massey and Netball Development Officer Rebecca Gray ran a Mild Learning Disability Netball Session on Thursday with an adult group from North Herts. This session included ball skills, drills and a match. The games became competitive with some great netball skills on show. The session gave a chance for the participants to express themselves in a sporting environment and socialise with others. The session was helped by three keen and enthusiastic volunteers.
“It was great to see everyone engaged, having fun and it was very well organised” –Volunteer
Netball Now a success
City Academy Norwich hosted the second Netball Now programme to be run in Norfolk. The session ran through July and August and we were lucky enough to have some lovely summer evenings. It was a great success with 110 registered participants. Feedback was really positive with many really enjoying the opportunity to play with people from different teams and leagues. It was also used as a great experience for newly qualified or beginners umpires to try their hand at umpiring before the start of the winter league
