Following an extensive career in government, corporate service and private law practice, Professor Freer answered the call of The Citadel to bring his experience to the teaching of business law courses in 2003, first as a visiting professor, then as the first John S. Grinalds Leader in Residence (2005-2006). Professor Freer now serves as the first BB&T Professor of Ethics and Free Enterprise Leadership. He also serves as President of The Free Enterprise Foundation. The Foundation’s goals are the continuing education of the public on the vital role of free enterprise in securing the blessings of liberty, and the creation of enterprise excellence consistent with the highest standards of ethics and civic responsibility through best practices. Located in Charleston, SC, the Foundation has set for itself a national goal of serving as a catalyst to encourage an ever rising standard of enterprise excellence consistent with long accepted notions of enterprise responsibility and adherence to fundamental principles. As The BB&T Chair, Prof. Freer, drawing on a lifetime of experience in government, private practice and as a senior officer and General Counsel of Kimberly–Clark and other corporations, teaches legal courses to both cadets and graduate business school students. Prof. Freer also teaches at The Charleston School of Law and is a South Carolina Certified Mediator.

During his career, Professor Freer has served on many corporate boards of both for-profit, not-for-profit and public corporations. He is currently on a number of not-for profit boards. Dr. Freer, an early leader in the field of responsible corporate governance, was chairman of the ABA Corporate Governance Subcommittee of the Section of Business, Banking and Corporation Law from 1980-1982 and is a featured columnist for The Charleston Mercury and other publications on the role of values in corporate management. He is the author of Citadel Values and Citadel Values II as well as a novel published by in the spring of 2008 by Book Surge LLC. Professor Freer has passed the NASDAQ Series 65 examination and is a registered investment advisor.
