DESCRIPTION OF THE Bylaws CHANGE AND ITS JUSTIFICATION
(Please add attachments to the end of the form.)
The sentence in parentheses under “b. Professional Staff” was inserted a few years ago, anticipating that the conflict would arise when staff members were appointed to committees. It should apply to both faculty and staff who become acting managers, and this has been what we have been practicing.
To remove any ambiguity, I suggest removing “at or” from the first sentence after Professional Staff. Likewise, the sentence following “Faculty” should be followed by “Individuals who are in acting positions at or above the level of Assistant Dean are not eligible to serve on standing committees)”.
The existing and proposed versions are attached.

EXISTING:

10.8.2  ELIGIBILITY

a.  Faculty: Any voting member of the faculty shall be eligible for election to the standing committees.

b.  Professional Staff: Any full-time member of the professional staff who serves at or below the level of Assistant Dean shall be eligible for election to selected standing committees. (Individuals who are in acting positions at or above the level of Assistant Dean are not eligible to serve on standing committees). The above-defined professional staff members shall be eligible to serve on the following standing committees:
