GUIDELINES

Introduction

The Clare Burton Scholarship provides funds to support postgraduate research into gender equity. The Scholarship was established by the five ATN universities (Curtin, QUT, RMIT, UniSA, UTS) to honour and continue the work of Dr. Clare Burton, a pioneering Australian researcher, into aspects of gender equity. A scholarship of $10,000 is available to a student enrolled, or intending to enrol, in an ATN university, in either a postgraduate coursework or research degree where the major piece of work is focussed on gender equity.

This is the third time the scholarship has been offered, since the inaugural round in 2002.

Type of research supported

The field of gender equity encompasses women and equality in all spheres of endeavour such as employment, education, health, communications and so on.

Research proposals which are likely to make a significant contribution to the field, or contribute to the solution of an important practical problem will be supported.

Eligibility and funding

Applicants should be enrolled or intending to enrol in a post-graduate coursework or research degree in an ATN university, and be an Australian resident.

A stipend of $10,000 is available for a period of 12-18 months. The scholarship is available to both full-time and part-time students.

Selection criteria

The primary criteria for considering applications are:

  • the quality of the research proposal
  • the capability of the researcher

Other considerations may include:

  • the applicant's financial need; lack of previous access to research opportunities; and being from an under-represented group within higher education research.

The submitted application will be the major consideration for the selection committee, but interviews with applicants may also be considered.

Support and mentoring

Each of the 5 ATN institutions will provide encouragement and advice in the development of applications. Contact:

National ATN networks, e.g. WEXDEV, may also provide support, as appropriate.

Unsuccessful applicants will not receive detailed feedback on their research proposals.
