A Waterbury Student Orientation Leader conveys information to new students about University programs and services. They assist with all orientation events and play a vital role in assisting newly admitted students with getting acclimated to the campus community. The orientation leader position is an outstanding opportunity for any student interested in gaining leadership skills and enhancing his/her marketability for future positions.

Professional Character of the Orientation Leader Position:

As a Waterbury Student Orientation Leader you will be working on a team in a peer-counseling situation, where your comments are interpreted as University comments and care must be taken to represent all aspects of campus life without personal bias. You will be viewed as a role model for the University of Connecticut

The Orientation Leader will work with other staff members to facilitate the orientation program by:

  • Leading discussion groups with incoming students
  • Assisting in the preparation of registration activities and materials;
  • Explaining academic opportunities and procedures;
  • Acquainting new students with campus services
  • Aiding in the development of class schedules;
  • Assisting in the mechanics of the class registration process; and
  • Discussing sensitive issues

Qualifications:

All applicants must be:

  • At least 2nd semester by spring 2016
  • Be in good disciplinary and academic standing (2.5 overall GPA)
  • There are a variety of skills and qualities that an Orientation Leader should possess:
  • Sensitivity to diversity in all of its forms;
  • Effective communication skills;
  • Ability to work under pressure and be flexible;
  • Ability to lead new students through the orientation program, even those who do not want to be there;
  • Enthusiasm regarding the educational and social atmosphere at the UConn Waterbury campus
  • Ability to solve problems that may come up and be a team player with a positive attitude and work ethic; and
  • Ability to present all aspects of the University without bias to new students

Training for Peer Advisor Position – You MUST be available for both days.

Other employment or attending summer school on orientation or training days may not be possible.

Benefits/Compensation:

There are many benefits for students who pursue an Orientation Leader position. Most importantly, Orientation Leaders will gain significant leadership experience; an occasion for developing professional relationships with faculty, staff, and students; and skills in effective communication. Additional remuneration is as follows:

  • $11.00 per hour. Also, meals during orientation and training, and an Orientation t-shirt.
  • Payment is made bi-weekly.

  • Completed applications must be submitted by Monday, April 4th
  • Candidates who submit an application may be scheduled for a personal interview with 2 members of the Student Services staff during the weeks of April 5-18.
  • Up to 10 Orientation Leaders will be selected.

Detailed Breakdown of Orientation Leader Responsibilities

CONFIDENCE IN MEETING WITH A SMALL GROUP OF STUDENTS

Discuss campus-related topics: academic concerns, commuter living, student support services, parking questions, and any other issues relevant to new students. Be available to students for individual questions and concerns.

ACADEMIC ORIENTATION/REGISTRATION ASSISTANCE

Be familiar with the academic requirements and regulations for the University’s schools & colleges. Review school/college requirements for freshmen. Help orient new students to the features of the student administration system and assist students with the registration process.

PREPARE SELF WITH INFORMATION AND THE SKILLS NECESSARY FOR THE ORIENTATION POSITION

It is important that students familiarize themselves with the responsibilities of the position and participate in all required training sessions.

OTHER DUTIES AS REQUIRED

All Orientation staff will help in completing any other tasks that may be necessary to get the needs of the orientation program accomplished. This includes stuffing packets, running messages, helping with other tasks as they arise.

SPECIAL NOTE FOR ALL ORIENTATION LEADER APPLICANTS

The Orientation program follows all the rules & policies of the University during its entire orientation program operation. Any staff member who violates a University policy whether on or off duty will be documented for University disciplinary action and released from staff.
