Change Planning & Management

Change in the nonhuman aspects of organizational development, such as process and technology, are seldom as challenging as the human elements. Achieving the change you envision must happen through change in people. Managing effective change must address a long list of human fears. Our approach to implementing and sustaining change focuses on the alignment of leadership, culture, and decision-making.

We find that new initiatives are successful and lasting when the organization and its leaders

Attend to the quality of relationships

Nourish a clear organizational identity

Focus people on a bigger picture

Communicate honestly and quickly

Prepare for the unknown

Keep meaning in the forefront

Use rituals and symbols

Pay attention to individuals

When these capabilities and practices are in place, just about any change methodology will work. Choices of process and technology abound, but the combination of good strategy, strong leadership, and healthy cultures is rare, simply because people seldom put them all together. This is what we can help you do.

Meeting Planning & Facilitation

Effective group facilitation is one of the best ways to engage and leverage diverse perspectives and engage the people most impacted by the decision-making process. We facilitate team-building, planning sessions, focus groups, and public forums using methodologies that encourage open, creative, and comfortable dialog with a focus. As part of our facilitation services, we can also assist you with determining the right attendees, developing research questions and surveys, analyzing data, and completing comprehensive summary reports.

Strategic and Personal Coaching

We integrate coaching in all that we do. While facilitating, planning, leading projects, or delivering training, we also look for opportunities to coach key individuals in the business and life skills they wish to enhance. This approach provides real cases for one-on-one dialog and collaboration and benefits the individual while supporting what the group is seeking to accomplish.

Training & Workshops for Leadership Development

Leadership Development

We take a different approach to leadership development for two reasons. First, there is already a multitude of services and tools for the development of individual leadership skills. Second, we believe that the characteristics of effective leadership must evolve with the qualities that make an organization successful in any given business environment. That’s a lot of change for any leader to deal with alone. Therefore, our focus is on your organization’s capacity for leadership. Every individual in the organization has the commitment and ability to lead within his or her area of accountability. This capacity is within culture and the behaviors and systems that perpetuate it. Can you trust every employee or team to make decisions aligned with your organization’s mission or vision? We can help you examine the impact you, as a leader, have on this capacity, and if necessary identify opportunities for realistic change.

Leadership is not just a capability of individuals – to be effective, leadership must be a characteristic of team and organizational culture. We offer services that assess and develop your organizations abilities to connect, communicate, and collaborate.

Training and Workshops

We provide workshops and trainings to develop the practical skills that leaders require to build an organization’s leadership capacity. We can also customize the delivery to take an intervention approach by performing the appropriate assessments prior to delivery and/or tailoring the content to address your specific opportunity. Our current workshops include

·  Creating a Culture of Leadership

·  Best Practices in Decision-Making and Problem-Solving

·  Leadership and Conflict Management

All of our workshops include the development of personal plans for implementing change.

About

Olivia Herriford, D.M., helps leaders and teams achieve their objectives using her leadership skills as a planner, facilitator, and coach. Her expertise is building and motivating high-performance while identifying the behaviors and processes that sustain them. Dr. Herriford has earned trust, sparked communication, and honed her organizational savvy in high-technology, financial, government, and non-profit environments.

Olivia received her Doctor of Management degree and Master of Business Administration degree from the University of Phoenix and her Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science from Northrop University. Dr. Herriford is faculty at John F. Kennedy University and the University of Phoenix. She is also a personal and professional development workshop leader for the Recharge Institute and a certified mediator.

Prior to becoming a business owner in 1996, Olivia developed and successfully applied her leadership, operational, and interpersonal skills as a leader at Tandem Computers, Ingres, and Dun & Bradstreet Computing Services (formerly National CSS). Over a twenty-five year career in high-tech management, all of her roles required the building, development, and leadership of teams providing technical services to customers. She attributes her character, spirit, and joy in helping others to this consistent element of her professional growth.

Upon earning her doctorate in organizational leadership in 2002, Olivia began to transform her career to pursue her interest in organizational behavior and development. She has successfully integrated her research in emotional intelligence and organizational culture with her years of experience in helping businesses apply technology into an expertise in helping people embrace change and new ways of working with each other.

A strong believer in servant leadership, Dr. Herriford inspires her business practices by also being of service to the community. She is currently on the board of the Bayview Hunters Point YMCA and served on the San Jose Childrens Discovery Museum Board of Directors from 1997 to 2004. She also volunteers as a mediator for the Center for Human Development’s Conflict Resolution Program.

While growing up in Compton, California, Olivia envisioned adding a human touch to a world overly enthralled with technology. Her initial career in high-tech drew her to Silicon Valley, Northern California, and she now lives in Walnut Creek. Her favorite pastimes are enjoying the moment, people, travel, golf, smooth jazz, and early morning, top-down drives in her 1986 Alfa Romeo Spider. Her life-long goal has been to see and experience as much of the world as possible.

Philosophy

The activity of a high-performance organization is always driven by a common purpose. Success is a factor of the number of people that find meaning in that purpose. The reason - meaningfulness motivates, commits, and compels.

Accelerating change combined with increasing uncertainty in our lives and work appear to make strategy, purpose, and vision old paradigms. But we must not lose awareness that although this rate of change is constant, in the longer run, very little change in the things that matter actually occurs. The human spirit and the power of our collective purposes – the underlying reasons for achievement and organizing – endures all social phenomenon and economic turbulence.

How do we engage this spirit and power in our efforts to realize both individual and organizational goals? Assisting others with this continuous discovery underlies the purpose of Herriford Consulting.

The Realization and Achievement of Organizational Purpose

Far too often, teams and entire organizations embark upon a path toward a goal without an encompassing strategy and plan that aligns with culture. Structure and processes may exist. Roles and responsibilities are defined. Success criteria are established. But without an honest and accurate assessment of current reality, a shared purpose that everyone can articulate, and leader role models, the journey and its end are disappointments.

While many people have difficulty stating their “purpose in life”, most hold in their minds and hearts some image of a future in which they play a part they love. Teams, departments, and organizations shouldn’t lack a vision or purpose – they would not have formed without some goal to achieve. But many groups lack the sense of connection to something that is so important to us as human beings. While well-documented statements of mission, vision, and core values abound, attempts to organize around them fail because of this disconnect with the human spirit.
