Maintenance Mechanic Lead Grounds

Department Introduction:

Facilities Maintenance and Facilities Construction are responsible for general maintenance, repair, alterations, and renovations of all campus facilities including building interiors, exteriors, and grounds.

Job Purpose:

Lead and work with journey trades workers performing skilled maintenance work in the repair, remodeling, and construction of buildings, grounds, facilities and equipment.

Lead and work with Maintenance Mechanics, Utility Workers, Sprinkler Maintenance Workers and Gardeners to perform journey-level work in the construction, repair, maintenance, and design review and water management of irrigation systems for buildings, facilities and grounds.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Perform, and lead others, in all duties of an irrigation maintenance mechanic and other journey trades personnel
  • Manage campus irrigation water use for effective conservation through a central computerized control system
  • Develop methods and procedures to be followed by assigned personnel
  • Develop preliminary cost estimates for installation and repair
  • Maintain shop inventory and anticipate requirements in advance of projects
  • Keep leads and supervisors informed of project status/work progress, and needed materials and equipment
  • Inspect projects to ensure compliance with local standards and codes
  • Inspect projects to ensure compliance with design, instruction and maintain maintenance project records
  • Assist in employee interviews and make hiring recommendations; provide information for employee performance reviews to supervisor/manager
  • Communicate with Facilities Services’ shops and Engineering Services to facilitate work
  • Know and ensure that assigned personnel comply with occupational health and safety regulations that apply to work actions and conduct on the job, including Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) instructions, and the use of personal protective equipment whenever required; report safety infractions to the shop supervisor or manager
  • Follow and enforce adherence to all University and Facilities Services’ policies and procedures
  • Interact with clients, coworkers, management, staff, and students in a courteous and professional manner, with particular attention to excellent customer service
  • Attend all required meetings and training
  • May assist in development of departmental budget
  • May perform work in other trades
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Required Skills, Experience and Knowledge:

  • One year full-time experience as a Maintenance Mechanic 2, journey-level trades worker, or equivalent
  • Possession of a valid motor vehicle operator's license may be required
  • Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration
  • Have knowledge and understand of safe work practices and policies
  • Must be able to wear all proper Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) as required
  • Must be able to follow written and/or verbal instructions and communicate in English regarding the use of chemicals, supplies, and equipment; comply with safety policies and procedures

Desirable Skills, Experience and Knowledge:

  • Demonstrated successful experience as a lead
  • Demonstrated ability to manage large irrigation systems with a computerized centrally controlled irrigation management program
  • Take direction; work well with others and as a member of a team, as well as in providing excellent customer services
  • Demonstrated effective verbal and written communication skills
  • Demonstrated successful experience in computer technology and computerized maintenance management systems
  • Knowledge and practical experience with WISHA (Washington Industrial Safety and Health Act) and OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Act) regulations
  • Experience with a computerized centrally controlled irrigation system
  • Familiar with Seattle Public Utilities conservation rebate program
  • Certified Water Auditor

Conditions of Employment:

  • Valid driver's license recognized by the state of Washington
  • May be required to accept variable work shift
  • Must be able to work in a smoke-free environment
  • Approved footwear must be provided at the employee’s expense and worn on the job
  • Must be able to be fitted for and wear a respirator on the job
  • Ability to lift and move heavy material is required
  • Must be able to work outside under all weather conditions
  • Work may require access to confined spaces and heights using approved safety procedures
  • A tuberculosis (TB) test is required for work assignments in nonhuman primate areas and in the UW Medical Center
  • A satisfactory outcome from a criminal background verification will be required prior to hire
