Growth Group discussion questions for Genesis 6:1 – 9:17

  1. NCC Q26: What else does Christ’s death redeem?
    A: Christ’s death is the beginning of the redemption and renewal of every part of fallen creation, as he powerfully directs all things for his own glory and creation’sgood.
    Memorize, meditate on and be ready to recite Colossians 1:19-20.
  2. What principles or thoughts had the most impact on you from the message on this passage on Sunday, March 4th? How were you specifically challenged? What points of application did you take awayfrom the message?
  3. Read Genesis 6:1 – 9:17.
  4. From the time when Adam and Eve were created to the time Noah had his children, mankind filled the earth for approximately 1,500 years. From God’s point of view in chapter 6, how well had they done morally? What was God’sassessment of mankind? Explain. (6:5-6, 11-12)
  5. What was God’s response to the level of sin he saw in mankind? Why was God justified in deciding to take such action? (6:7, 13, 17; 7:4) Would God be justified indeciding to judge mankind again? Why or why not?
  6. Would you say mankind is morally better or about the same since the flood? (8:21; Ps. 14:1-3, 58:3-4; Rom. 3:10-18;) Why does mankind continue to have such a struggle with sin, rebellion, and disobedience?

  7. God chose to preserve mankind and the animals through one man and his family. What was God’s assessment of Noah’s character?What does it mean to “walk with God?” What kinds of qualities or actions would characterize such a life? (6:8-9, 7:1; e.g. Ps. 63:1-8, what else?)
  8. After Noah and the inhabitants of the ark left the ark, what was Noah’s first recorded act? Why do you think he would do this? Was God pleased with it? (8:20-22; ref. Lev. 1:3-17, although the law was not yet given)
  9. After the flood, God made a covenant with Noah and all living creatures. What is a covenant? What was the covenant he made with Noah? What was the regular sign that God gave as a reminder of this covenant? (9:8-17)
  10. Jesus refers to the flood as he references an upcoming event. What is that event? What was Jesus’ point in referring to Noah? (Matt. 24:3, 21, 27-31, 36-39, 44)
  11. What connections does Peter make to God’s rescuing Noah and his family from the flood?

  • Let’s thank the Lord for the marvelous way He led us to Josiah Kenniv as our new worship leader. To God be the glory for His obvious answer to our prayers over several years. Pray for God to prepare Josiah’s heart for this new ministry position and that God would use him for His good kingdom purposes.
