Offered by: Representative Stevens of Shoreham

Whereas, Dan Collins, a sixth-generation Vermonter, has devoted his professional career to public education in both traditional and alternative settings, and

Whereas, in 1964, Dan Collins began his career as a teacher at the former Brandon Training School, a facility for individuals with special needs, and he also served successfully for four years as the school’s principal, encountering administrative challenges that most public school principals will never confront, and

Whereas, he then opted for the slightlymoreroutine environment of the Rutland Achievement Center where he assumed the roles of both program director and educational director, and

Whereas, upon concluding his service at the Rutland Achievement Center, Dan Collins decided to take a wellearned sabbatical that he has described as being a ski bum for a year, and

Whereas, although the slopes continued to draw his attention, Dan Collins recognized that he had much wisdom and guidance to offer the schoolchildren of western Vermont, and, in 1987, he resumed his pedagogic endeavors and focused his attention on elementary schools, and

Whereas, during the ensuing years, he worked as both a classroom teacher and administrator in the communities of West Haven, Castleton, and Wells before becoming the Shoreham Elementary School’s principal in the fall of 1998, and

Whereas, during the last nine years, Dan Collins polished his reputation as a caring administrator who listened to and respected the opinions of the faculty and as a principal who developed a special bond of friendship with his students, and

Whereas, Dan Collins has exhibited a talent for managing and analyzing a variety of students’ assessment results and then implementing, and even exceeding, the goals for improving the original results, and

Whereas, he has accomplished this challenging task without losing sight of all the other aspects of a child’s development that are critical for a happy and productive life, and

Whereas, at the conclusion of the 2006–2007 school year, Dan Collins will close the principal’s door behind him for the last time and devote more time to his passions for sail boarding and skiing, but he promises to remain involved in public education as a volunteer, and

Whereas, Dan Collins has served as a model educator and mentor for his colleagues, now therefore be it
