Magic Square & Equations Project

1. You must work by yourself. NO GROUPS!!

2. Review how to write and solve one-step equations, two-step equations, and multi-step equations from your notes, quiz and the textbook.

3. You are going to create a Magic Square with equations. When we have solved magic squares in class, every row, column, and diagonal equal the same amount. That is very hard to do when creating a square. For your magic square, you must only make the rows and columns equal the same amount. Make sure your Magic Number is listed on the answer page but leave it blank on your final copy. (For those who want an extra challenge, please include the diagonals.)

4. Your magic square may be created by hand or on the computer. It should be made on a regular sheet of paper

(8.5 x 11 in.).

5. Your math calculations MUST be correct. In addition to turning in a blank magic square, an answer key should be provided. All steps MUST be shown to solve each equation. (Yes, that means your answer key should have the completed magic square and nine (9) problems with all work.)

6. Neatness counts. Your magic square should be easy to read and should be able to be copied. Make sure your numbers, are clear.

7. Your magic square should contain a variety of equations and numbers. You should have equations with fractions, decimals, and integers; you should have equations that are one-step, two-step, multi-step and have variables on both sides

8. This project will be graded on a 20-point scale. This sheet should be stapled to your square and answer key.

You will be graded on the following four categories: (5 points each)

1. Neatness and effort – Make sure your project magic square is neat and able to be completed by another student.

2. Variety – Make sure you have a variety of equations and numbers.

3. Math Concept Used – Your equations should be equations that I would give you- don’t make them too easy!

4. Calculation Page – This page must be accurate and detailed. You need to have an answer key and show steps for solving all nine boxes.
