BLC Mission

Bayou Land Conservancy is a community-sponsored land preservation organization working with willing landowners to permanently protect land, with a focus on the 13 watersheds that feed Lake Houston. We preserve river and bayou corridors, other properties with significant wildlife habitat value and places where family recreation can occur in harmony with nature. Our "No Child Left Inside" education program connects tomorrow's conservation leaders with nature today. Bayou Land Conservancy is proud to have conserved over 12,000 acres in the Houston area.

Position details:

Bayou Land Conservancy is now seeking a high-energy individual to join our team to connect local citizens with our important conservation and environmental education work.

We are looking for a person with a proven ability to instill excitement in individuals and families, groups, and companies regarding the wonders of nature. Through connected, positive media relations as well as creative and focused marketing efforts, we want this individual to engage with and connect to our current members. This position will also focus on the short-term goal of growing a new membership base with the long-term goal of motivating these new members to become life-long supporters of our mission.

The position requires strong organizational skills, comfort communicating in person, on the phone, through social media, with donors and leaders of partner organizations and – as a member of a small but ambitious staff – willingness to pitch in on diverse tasks as needed.

This is a full-time position based out of our NW Houston Lake Rd. office. The work will predominantly be an 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. work day, 5 days a week, with occasional evening and/or weekend dates when necessary.

Tasks and Responsibilities:

Constituency Building

  • Attend and represent BLC at various community events
  • Recruit and assist in the management of Spring Creek Greenway Ambassador program
  • Coordinate volunteers attendees at events
  • Coordinate speaking engagements
  • Support staff in development of PowerPoint presentations
  • Reach out to established new BLC Preserve “user” groups (hiking, biking, kayaking…)
  • Grant writing to foundations corporations for various outreach needs
  • Increase membership for: individuals, families, corporations

Media Relations

  • Support Executive Director with media coverage and campaigns produced by media consultants
  • Write, edit distribute press releases, media advisories op-ed pieces
  • Coordinate editorial board visits, press events press field trips
  • Coordinate press coverage for school field trips
  • Maintain upgrade internal database of media contacts
  • Promote article placement and oversee associated message development

Social media

  • Write, take photos edit content for electronic newsletters
  • Manage all content updating of website
  • Manage update FB, Instagram, Twitter accounts
  • Support other staff blog updates
  • Propose and help develop new communication vehicles

Qualifications:

We are looking for an individual with at least three years’ experience working in a sales or non-profit (conservation, arts, social services, health) withexperience in public relations, media outreach, writing, editing, journalism and/or marketing communications.A background in sales, journalism,public relations, public policy, natural resources, or conservation is desirable.

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Graphic design and production skills essential; at minimum must be able to work within templates for Photoshop, Illustrator, PowerPoint
  • Experience with web software and social media a must; preferably Wix, HTML
  • Valid TX. driver’s license, ability to pass background check
  • Ability to be outdoors in extreme heat, humidity, or cold
  • Ability to work effectively in a small, busy and highly efficient organization
  • Reliable transportation

Salary range will be from $42,000 to $50,000 commensurate with experience.
