Engine oil change

Tools

Square section socket, ratchet handle, oil filter removal tool, suitable oil collecting pan (must hold 5l min)

Parts

Oil filter, new engine oil (either 5w-40 or 10w-40), new sump plug washer

Firstly put on some old clothes, cover the area under your engine with newspaper and have a load of old cloths and newspaper nearby…you will get oily.

Run your car for a few minutes until the oil warms up a little bit, not too much as the oil will get too hot and could burn you.

Turn the engine off again.

Use the square section socket to unscrew the sump plug located at the rear of the oil sump, it will be tight. Make sure you have the oil pan placed underneath it accounting for the fact the oil will spurt out backwards about 8”. As the plug becomes loose, take off the ratchet and unscrew the final turns by hand. As you feel it undo completely press the plug against the sump to hold the oil in, then suddenly release it, catching the oil in the pan, watch as the flow lessens and move the pan as necessary.

Wait till the oil slows to a trickle.

Now put more news paper under where the oil filter is and get out your filter removing tool, unscrew the oil filter, do the last turns by hand and try to catch any remaining oil in there as you take it off.

Clean the area around where the oil filter fits to the block with a rag. Run a film of new oil around the new seal on the new filter. Now screw in your new oil filter, do not use anything other than your hands to tighten it else you’ll never get it off again.

Now get the sump plug and discard the old sump plug washer. Fit your new washer onto the plug, and when the oil flow from the sump has totally stopped screw in the sump plug again and tighten it fully.

Now all you need to do is refill the oil through the oil cap, take care not to over fill it. Just take your time, do it a bit at a time, and allow 10 mins for the oil to settle to the sump before checking the dip stick and refilling as necessary.
