ASSESSMENT OF ALL YOUNG CHILDREN & FIELD EXPERIENCE

COURSE DESCRIPTION

Assessment of All Young Children & Field Experience: (3) (B.S.). Prerequisite: Admission to the Early Childhood Education B.S. Program.This course focuses on authentic assessment of all young children. It includes identification, administration, and interpretation of assessment instruments and processes for intellectual, social, physical, emotional, educational and language evaluation. Students will learn classroom-based assessment, and the interpretation and use of that information to plan curriculum that is responsive to and supportive of children’s learning and the early childhood teacher’s assessment responsibilities. Students will be provided information on the Florida Educator Accomplished Practices, Sunshine State Standards and the Professional Educator Competencies. Students are required to complete a minimum of 15 hours of field-based experience (during the term in which the course is taken) with preschoolers, children and/or youth in schools or similar professional educational settings. (This field component must be via virtual modes of film or Internet.)

PERFORMANCE STANDARDS

The student, at the successful completion of EEX 3226, should be able to:

  1. Identify required testing and assessments.
  1. Demonstrate an understanding of the Federal, State and Local requirements related to assessments.
  1. Determine whether assessment information is accurate, reliable, valid and fair to enhance children’s learning and development.
  1. Articulate the reasons for assessments.
  1. Correctly identify documentation including how to collect information for appropriate assessments.
  1. Demonstrate an understanding of the appropriate timing for choosing the appropriate assessment and using the information collected.
  1. Document and record information including rate, rank, scales and rubrics.
  1. Demonstrate an understanding of the important parts of the portfolio for group and individual profiles and summaries.
  1. Demonstrate an understanding of and interpret the meaning of assessment findings.
  1. Plan strategies for curriculum and classroom modifications strategies based upon assessments.
