Capacity Building in Mathematics and Its Applications
Call for applications for PhD Scholarships tenable at Makerere University in collaboration with the following five Swedish Universities:Linköping University, Mälardalen University, Stockholm University,The Royal Institute of Technology-KTH and Uppsala University.
Makerere University, under the support of Uganda-Sweden bilateral cooperation, is recruiting ten (10) students to conduct PhD studies in mathematics at Makerere University. The training will be in both Pure and Applied Mathematics but with preference to Pure Mathematics.Women mathematicians are especiallyencouraged to apply.
The candidates must satisfy the requirements for admissionto Makerere University. The programme started in November 2015 and will be supported up to June 2020.
Eligibilityrequirements
The applicant must
- Be holding at least a Master’s degree in Mathematics (or equivalent).
- Be a staff member of the department of Mathematics, Makerere University or one of the Partner Public Universities (Gulu, Busitema, Mbarara and Kyambogo). However, those in pure mathematics area and are potential members of staff in these departments, with support letters from the heads of departments indicating that they would be considered for appointment now or later, may be considered.
- Upon completion of the PhD studies,be willing to continue as an academic staff member of Makerere University or at one of the partner public universities for at least 5 years in order to contribute to research, teaching and outreach in the area of mathematics.
- Be committed to complete the studies within the agreement period.
- Demonstrate the ability to think creatively and work independently and also be able to work in a team of researchers.
Interested applicants should submit the following sets of documents
- An application letter for scholarship for PhD studentship
- A current CV (maximum five pages), which includes a detailed description of previous education at university level (all courses and grades) and a description of current research interests.
- A copy of the current identity card orpassport.
- Three recent passport photos.
- A certified copy of the applicant’s Master’s degree/diploma.
- A hard copy of the applicant’s Master’s thesis abstract.A soft copy of the thesis should also be sent to the emails below.
- A research concept note of maximum 5 pages (see concept note format below).
- At least two recommendation letters from academic referees.
The Concept Note must include:
- A description of the applicant’s research interests in mathematics.
- A description of the applicant’s background in this area/these areas.
- A discussion on the applicant’s motivation for conducting PhD studies.
- A discussion on what outputs the applicant expects to realize through the PhD studies.
Selection
The short listed candidates shall be interviewed by a panel formed by the Department of Mathematics, team leader of the project at Makerere, coordinators from the universities in the consortium, and team leader of the project on the Swedish side.

Capacity Building in Mathematics and Its Applications
Call for applications for two postdoctoral fellowships tenable at any of the following five Swedish Universities: Linköping University, Mälardalen University, Stockholm University, The Royal Institute of Technology-KTH and Uppsala University.
Makerere University, under the support of the Uganda-Sweden bilateral cooperation, is announcing two postdoctoral fellowships in mathematics for the academic year 2016-2017. Accepted applicants will conduct their research at any of the five consortium universities. However, under special circumstances, accepted applicants may conduct their research in other universities. The research will be in both Pure and Applied Mathematics but with preference to Pure Mathematics.Women mathematicians are especially encouraged to apply.
Each grant is around 160,000 SEK and is estimated to cover flight tickets, accommodation, and subsistence allowancefor up to 8 months in Sweden.
Eligibility requirements
- The applicant must be a staff member of the department of Mathematics, Makerere University.
- The PhD-degree must not be older than five years by the time of application.
Interested applicants should submit the following sets of documents
- An application letter for the postdoctoral fellowship.
- A current CV (maximum 5 pages).
- A copy of the current identity card or passport.
- Three recent passport photos.
- A copy of the applicant’s PhD thesis.
- All applicant’s publications.
- A research plan describing the research to be undertaken, not exceeding five pages including reference list.
- An invitation from the group/researcher to be visited.
- A release letter from the Head of Department of Mathematics, Makerere University.
- At least two recommendation letters from academic referees.
Selection
The applications shall be vetted by a panel formed by the Department of Mathematics, Directorate of Research and Graduate Training, team leader of the sub-programme at Makerere, coordinators from the universities in the consortium, and team leader of the sub-programme from Sweden.
Report
A scientific report, endorsed by the host, on the outcomes and activities should be sent to the team leader for the mathematics sub-programme at Makerere University, Assoc. Prof. John Mango Magerono later than three months after the completion of the visit. All publications and manuscripts must be attached to the report. The report should also be disseminated at a scientific seminar at the Makerere University.
