World Lit Mini-Mastery #2: Who’s Who in The Iliad NAME ______

The Iliad is an epic that is huge in scope, with larger-than-life champions sharing a battlefield with the gods. It is also totally universal in its themes: we can recognize ourselves and those we know in many of the characters and predicaments that they face, even if the consequences of OUR romances, friendships, and arguments don’t generally result in a ten-year long war. One of the most important aspects of this story is the humanity of its characters, and how relatable they are, despite the heroic or even immortal nature of their existence. In this mini-Mastery, you will be delving deep into the personality of one character, while simultaneously showing your understanding of how this character functions in the story through his or her relationship with other important figures.

YOUR TASK à Create 2 sets of materials that use image and text to show characterization.

TASK 1: Instagram Project à Make an Insta profile for your character.

REQUIREMENTS

ð  Original profile name (think punny, or revealing about the character’s role, hobbies, passions, character traits…

ð  At least 5 photos that you think they might post

o  Option 1, complete layout on computer with actual photos/images.

o  Option 2, print out the Instagram “blank” and either collage or draw your images.

** Sure, some of them they might selfie, but consider what else they’d post about!

ð  Caption each photo with a line of text that is appropriate to both the image and the character. Cite Book/line #.

ð  Add #hashtags that are appropriate – consider the character’s personality and their role in the story!

ð  Make sure to give each photo likes and comments – the whole set of 5 photos must have comments from AT LEAST 5 other characters (one must be a god). Feel free to leave as many comments and replies as you’d like. **Think about which characters would interact with each other in friendly ways, who would encourage someone vs. who might burn someone, and what each character’s personality is. Get creative!

TASK 2: “Le mot juste” – the goal is to PERFECTLY characterize your assigned figure from the story.

è  “Le mot juste” means, literally, the “just-right” word. It’s a French phrase that means you’ve perfectly captured exactly what you mean to say with precisely the right word.

REQUIREMENTS

ð  Use the list on the back to identify “le mot juste” to characterize your assigned figure from the story. Don’t be shy about working the dictionary until you find that exactly-right word!

ð  Make a silhouette out of BLUE if you are Trojan, RED if you are Greek, or GOLD if you are one of the gods.

ð  On the front of the silhouette, creatively and boldly display the character’s name & the word you have chosen to characterize that person.

ð  On the back, attach a very well-developed TE/EA paragraph that supports your claim about le mot juste that captures your character, offering 3-4 pieces of text evidence that show 3-4 different STEAL elements (what the character Says, Thinks/feels, Effect on others, Actions, Looks)
