What is a Jesse Tree?

The Jesse Tree helps us connect the custom of decorating Christmas trees to the events leading to Jesus’ birth. The Jesse tree is named from Isaiah 11:1 – “A shoot shall come out of the stock of Jesse, and a branch shall grow out of his roots.” Jesse was the father of King David. We adorn a Jesse Tree with illustrated ornaments that represent the people, prophesies, and events leading up to the birth of Jesus. The ornaments of the Jesse Tree tell the story of God in the Old Testament, connecting the Advent season with the faithfulness of God across 4,000 years of history.
These are the people and their symbols in the Old Testament who were important in Israel’s history as the nation waited for a savior:
Solomon, the great king, is represented by the columns or pillars.
Isaiah, the great prophet, is represented by a throne.
Hezekiah is represented by the tablets of the law.
Josiah is represented by a book.
Miriam is symbolized by music notes.
Samuel is symbolized by a lamp.
David, the great king, is symbolized by a harp for his writing of the psalms.
Jesse, the father of King David, is symbolized by a branch.
John the Baptist is represented by a river where he baptized many.
Elizabeth, the relative of Mary, is represented a dove.
Ruth, the faithful daughter-in-law of the Old Testament, is represented by straw.
And Jesus is represented by a manger in which he was born.
Next Sunday, we’ll look at more people and more symbols that will fill our Jesse Tree before Christmas.

El Árbol de Jesse nos ayuda conectar la costumbre de decorar el árbol de la Navidad con los eventos que conducen al nacimiento de Jesús. El Árbol de Jesse es nombrado por profeta Isaías en capitulo once, versículo uno: “De ese tronco que es Isaí, sale un retoño; un retoño brota de sus raíces.” Jesse era el padre del rey David.
