Guidelines for IAI Course Evaluation to Determine IAI GECC Compliance

Academic records will be evaluated for completion of the IAI GECC at the student’s request. Verification of completion will be placed on the student’s transcript. Acceptance of evaluated transfer credit outside of IAI may be applicable to meet the IAI GECC and transfer degree requirements at BHC. Some institutions may elect to re-evaluate these courses.

a)When a non-approved GECC (General Education Core Curriculum) course from a participating IAI school is nonetheless articulated directly as an equivalent to a BHC IAI approved course, IAI credit will be given. Example: Northern Illinois University’s ENG 205, Survey of English Lit II, articulates as an equivalent to BHC’s ENG 221 (H3 912).

b)When a course from a regionally accredited, non-participating IAI school (both in and out of the state of Illinois) is articulated directly as an equivalent to a BHC IAI approved course, IAI credit will be given. Example: A student transfers Psychology 101 in from Augustana or University of Iowa.

c)When an IAI general education course transfers to BHC and has no BHC IAI equivalent, it will apply to the IAI GECC category for which it was originally approved. Example: The following course appears on a transfer student’s transcript from IllinoisStateUniversity: CHE 102, Chemistry and Society (P1 903L). It will be applied to the Physical/Life Science category at BHC.

d)When an IAI general education course transfers to BHC and the equivalent course is not approved for the IAI general education, the student may request a waiver from the academic dean so that the course may be applied to the IAI general education category for which it was originally approved. This would create an opportunity for a transfer student that is not available to a BHC native student. Example: WIU’s BIOL 102 (L1 902L) equates to BHC’s BIOL 106 which is not approved as an IAI general education course at Black Hawk College.

e)If a student’s course from another IAI participating institution transfers to BHC into a different IAI GECC category than the one for which it was originally taken, the student may request a waiver from the academic dean so that the course may be applied to another IAI general education category. Example: WIU’s HIST 105 (H2 904), is a Humanities course but transfers to BHC as HIST 251, (S2 900), a Social/Behavioral Sciences course.

f)BHC or transfer course work taken prior to summer 1998 will be applied toward completion of the IAI GECC.

  • BHC courses may or may not have an approved IAI number(s)
  • Some BHC courses may be approved only as a general education course, ex: ANTH 101 (S1 902)
  • Some BHC courses may be approved as both a general education and a Major course, ex: CHEM 101 (P1 902L)(CHM 911)
  • Some BHC courses may be approved only as a Major course, ex: CHEM 102 (CHM 912)
  • Only courses that are approved as or equivalent to the IAI General Education Core Curriculum will be applicable toward the completion of the IAI GECC.
