Rotary Literacy Program. It is the foundation for virtually all forms of education and an essential component of poverty reduction, social inclusion, economic development and empowerment. Despite the importance of literacy, there are over 800 million people, who are unable to read or write in the world today. Over 64 percent of these people are women and girls. Millions more are functionally illiterate, lacking the skills necessary to meet the demands of everyday life. For many years, Rotarians have been active in efforts to reduce illiteracy working with governments and non-government organizations in building schools, serving as tutors, collecting and distributing books and audiovisual materials to libraries and schools

Now is a good time to be looking for potential Group Study Exchange team Members. In past years, we’ve procrastinated (apparently) and ended up with applicants trying to put things together in a very short time. If you know someone who might be interested, you might sound him or her out now so that there isn’t a time crunch.

Still looking (particularly for those who actually come to meetings)

You've got to go out on a limb sometimes because that's where the fruit is.

If you have an important point to make, don't try to be subtle or clever. Use a pile driver. Hit the point once. Then come back and hit it again. Then hit it a third time-a tremendous whack.

Taped interview with Dr. James Herrera, District Youth Exchange Committee Chair, was shown at the last meeting by pp Ahmed Selim. The interview was hosted by pp Mike McCormack. Jim Herrera described the youth program and some of the benefits accrued by it. While living with a host family in a country other than their own, the students may learn a new language; they will learn a new way of living and a great deal about themselves. During their stay, the people they meet will be learning as well — about the visitor’s country, culture, and ideas. Students will be ambassadors, and they will be helping to bring the world closer together.

The Entertainment Books are here. In case you haven’t noticed, everyone and his/her brother are trying to push them now. So get a jump start and get some orders before it is too late. See the list Joe Scheibler sent out for possible vacancies.

For those of you who couldn’t, or didn’t get to Sweden and/or Denmark, start planning for the next one in Salt Lake City in June 2007.

Sure we’ve got some Paul Harris Fellows, and even more. One of President Joe’s aims is to have every member be at least a Sustaining Member.

Who is a Sustaining Member? The following is the definition for a Sustaining Member as agreed on, by the Trustees of the Rotary Foundation: “A Rotary Foundation Sustaining Member is a person who makes a minimum initial gift of $100 or more and states in writing his/her intention to make a minimum gift of $100 or more per year thereafter to the Annual Programs Fund.”

Please contact Rotarian Horace McCormack for more information or to make your contribution at or

(703) 447-8637 cell.

Contributing only 0.27 ½ cents a day will make you a sustaining member of the Rotary Foundation
