Maths
In Maths this term, the children willcover number work including addition and subtraction within 20; place value within 50 and begin to learn to count in 2s, 5s, and 10s. They will also be comparing, describing and solving practical problems for length, height, weight and volume, using non-standard and standard units of measurement such as centimetres, metres, grams, kilograms, millilitres and litres.
Science
The children will focus on animals and plants. They will understand the basic needs of human beings and what plants need tosurvive and stay healthy. The children will also identify the parts of a plant and their function. They will continue to identify seasonal changes and contrast Autumn and Winter.
Creative Curriculum - Stars and Stripes (Geography focus)
English
The children will work through three units of work, covering fiction, non-fiction and poetry. Through fiction texts, the children will predict stories and use drama tore-create parts of a story. The children will also identify speech in stories through drama and transfer this to their written work. Through non-fiction texts, the children will focus on labels, captions and
non-chronological reports.They will research, record facts and write anon-chronological report about ‘The Wild West Cowboys’. They will also contrast olden day and modern-day cowboys. The children will write reports based on famous U.S.A. landmarks. In poetry, based on New York City, the children will investigate the form and the use of powerful verbs and similes.
Art
The children will develop their painting and collaging skills to represent famous U.S.A. landmarks.
Geography
The children will identify the continents and oceans of the world, using a world atlas. They will also name and identify some of the states of America, rivers and lakes. The childrenwill contrast two countries, America and Great Britain, for example, in terms of climate and population.
ICT
The children will use an art package to re-create the USA flag. They will draw, paint and choose appropriate colours and tools to create their picture. The children willcontinue to be taught the importance of online safety and the use of email. Theywill use logic programs to predict and plan a route, by navigating a turtle.
P.E.
Children in year 1 will be continuing their work in Gymnastics and Dance. In gymnastics, the children will be practising their rolling, balancing and gymnastic performance. In Dance, the children will be practising dances that support their topic work.

R.E
In Religious Education, the children will be learning about special places, both in their own lives and in the religious world. They will also learn about religious customs and key articles of faith in different religions, and how these are used in worship. As Easter approaches, they will learn about the significance of this festival to Christians, and how it is celebrated.
Homework
Spellings – Given out on a Monday to be handed in on a Friday for a spelling test.
Reading Book and Words – changed at least once per week. We would appreciate you commenting on your child’s reading in the diary provided.
PLEASE ENSURE THAT YOU CHILD’S READING BOOK, WORDS AND DIARY ARE IN SCHOOL EVERYDAY.
Creative Curriculum – At least one piece of work to be completed each half term (see homework books). Books to be handed in on 9th February 2018 and 23rd March 2018.
Home Tasks – Three projects per term.
Library Book – To be returned and changed every Wednesday (Koalas), Thursday (Lions) and Friday (Pandas).
