The purpose of this Bulletin is to introduce a revised policy regarding the field modification (drilling and bolting) of the Newton™ adjustable-edge splice clamp assemblies in all Qwest central office earthquake zones.
In light earthquake zones, fixed-degree edge clamps are preferred in all cases where 45˚ and 90˚ cable rack elevation changes are needed, but there are instances where the adjustable edge splice clamps are used to accommodate cable rack transitions in non-standard arrangements. Adjustable splices are preferred in heavy earthquake zones.
Effective immediately, all adjustable-edge clamps will be modified (regardless of the prevailing earthquake zone) in all Qwest central office locations. Refer to Figure 1.
Since the Newton™ adjustable-edge splice clamp assemblies are not equipped with the needed modification piece parts (Refer to Table A), it will be necessary for the Service Supplier to procure these piece parts on a per job basis. In addition to the above, it should be noted that level changes shall be limited to 3 feet (except for splices installed at 45˚ and 90˚ where level changes are not limited and where fixed-degree edge clamps should be installed).
