SNC1DI: Course Outline: Spring 2012

A)WHAT IS IT?

  • SNC1DI is an academic level course intended to introduce students to a variety of topics in Science.
  • There are five main areas of study throughout the term:
  • An Introduction to Scientific Method
  • Chemistry: Atoms, Elements, and Compounds
  • Physics: Basic Principles of Electricity
  • Biology: Sustainable Ecosystems
  • Universe and Space

B)COURSE MATERIALS

**We are currently in a transition between textbooks and there are not enough texts for all grade nine students

  • Textbook(new): Pearson – Investigating Science (only classroom/on-line use)
  • Each will be given the web-site and password to access the text book on-line
  • Students are strongly encouragedto download a copy of the text book onto a memory stick from the “Bulletins” folder of their student home page.

C)PREPARATION AND ORGANIZATION

All teachers of grade nine students have decided to place extra emphasis on preparation and organization as key predictors of success.

To be properly prepared for science students will require the following materials each day:

  • A binder that is only used for science notes and assignments
  • A pen, pencil, ruler, calculator, and lined paper

D)EVALUATION

  • Unit Tests: (30%)

There will be 5 unit tests (one every 3-4 weeks).

Classroom Work: (30%)

Classroom work includes any lab reports, activities,quizzes and smaller assignments completed throughout the year.

  • Projects (10%)

There will be 2 or 3 larger projects. Some class time will be provided for each project, but the bulk of the work will need to be completed outside class time.

  • Lab Practical Test (10%)

There will be a in-class bell-ringer lab practical that all students must write. It will cover all the lab activities and teacher demonstrations throughout the term.

Final Exam: (20%)

E) All students will write a final exam during the examination period in June that covers material from the entire semester. (NO EXEMPTIONS)MISSED WORK AND HOMEWORK

  • Students are responsible for any materials missed during an absence.
  • Unless prior arrangements have been made, students with an explained absence will write any missing tests or quizzes the first day back.

F)Plagiarism

  • There is a school wide emphasis on educating students on plagiarism
  • Any assignments that are deemed to be “plagiarized” will be given one day to provide the appropriate sources or the student will be given zero.
  • All cases of plagiarism MUST BE REPORTED TO THE ADMINISTRATION.

1)STUDENTS HANDING IN IDENTICAL OR SIMILAR WORK

-students are encouraged to work with each other, but are asked to actually complete each assignment on their own so the chances of identical wording and sentence structure is minimized

-group projects, when announced, are an exception

2)CUTTING AND PASTING FROM THE INTERNET

-appropriate internet sources are acceptable but MUST BE REFERENCED when used

-information gained from any outside source must also be re-written in the students own words
