Adding -ing

Spelling Rule
Just add -ing to the end of the base verb:

·  work > working > worked

·  play > playing > played

·  open > opening > opened

Exceptions:

-ing

Verbs ending with one consonant one vowel and one consonant (with the exception of w, x, and y):

For one syllable verbs => double the consonant and add –ING
·  jog - jogging
·  sit - sitting
·  run - running
·  stop – stopping
·  hop – hopping
·  tap - tapping /

Verbs ending with –ie

Change the –ie to –y and add –ING
·  lie – lying
·  die -dying

Verbs ending with one consonant and –y

Add –ING
·  carry – carrying
·  study – studying
·  reply - replying

Verbs ending with one consonant one vowel and one consonant (with the exception of w, x, and y):

For two syllable verbs:

If the 1st syllable is stressed, just add ING

·  answer - answering
·  offer – offering
·  open - opening
·  listen - listening
·  visit – visiting
·  happen – happening
·  enter - entering
·  Exception: travel - travelling
If the 2nd syllable is stressed, double the consonant and add -ING
·  admit - admitting
·  prefer - preferring
·  begin – beginning /

Verbs ending with one vowel and –y

Add –ING
·  enjoy – enjoying
·  stay – staying

Verbs ending with two vowels and one consonant

Add –ING
·  need – needing
·  beep – beeping

Verbs ending with two consonants

Add –ING
laugh – laughing

Verbs ending with one consonant and –e (except verbs ending in –ee and –ie)

Drop the –e and add –ING
·  dance - dancing
·  skate – skating
·  phone – phoning
·  make – making
·  rake – raking
·  dye - dying

Verbs ending with –ee

Add -ING

·  agree - agreeing
·  flee – fleeing
·  see - seeing

Take into account that:

Consonants = b, c, d, f, g, h, j, k, l, m, n, p, q, r, s, t, v, w, x, y, z
Vowels = a, e, i, o, u

Be careful with these meanings!!!!

The word die > dying means to pass away.

The word dye > dyeing means to color.
