CAREER DEVELOPMENT EVENT

  1. Purpose

The purpose of the Horse Evaluation Career Development Event is to:

  1. Promote the study of and interest in equine science selection, care and well-being, management and production through the agricultural education curriculum.
  2. Encourage experiential learning through use of practical skills and applied knowledge.
  3. Provide recognition for those who have demonstrated skills and competencies as a result of instruction in equine science.
  1. Event Rules
  1. Teams may consist of three or four members. Team ranking is determined by combining the scores of the top three students from each team. Teams that have fewer than three members are not eligible for team awards, but students may receive individual awards.
  2. All attire of riders and handlers and tack is legal in the selection classes.
  3. All in-hand classes will be judged as sound, and all performance classes will be judged as they go, in regard to soundness.
  4. AQHA novice rules will be used in Hunter Under Saddle and Western Pleasure classes in reference to head set and head carriage.
  5. Any participant with a cellular device in their hand will be disqualified. Cellular devices may NOT be used as calculators under any circumstances.

  1. Materials each participant needs to provide:
  2. Clipboard (Clear and Unmarked)
  3. Two sharpened No. 2 pencils for placing classes
  4. No pre-printed materials will be allowed during the contest. Paper for record keeping and notes for oral reasons will be provided.
  5. Individual Activities
  6. Identification classes-40 points Participants will identify 10 breeds and/or colors and markings of horses and 10 tack and equipment items. Each problem will be worth 2 points each.
  7. Selection Classes-300

a.There will be a total of six classes judged, four (4) classes of halter and two (2) classes of performance events. There will be two (2) classes of oral reasons, one set of reasons in each area. Classes will be approximately 12-15 minutes in length. All classes will be 50 points. Oral reasons should not exceed two minutes in length.

b. Fourhalter classes will be judged. Halter classes may be represented by the following breed and types: Quarter Horse, Conformation Hunter, Appaloosa, Arabian, Paint, American Saddle Bred and Morgan. All halter classes will be judged as sound.

c. Two performance classes will be judged. Performance classes may include: Western Horsemanship, Hunt Seat Equitation, Western Pleasure, Western Riding, Reining, English Pleasure (Saddle Seat), Hunter Under Saddle (Hunt Seat), Trail and Hunter Hack. Performance classes will be judged as presented (unsoundness to be penalized accordingly). Patterns will be provided to the teams prior to the start of the event for all classes requiring patterns.

d. There will be one oral reasons class selected from Western Pleasure, Reining, English Pleasure (Saddle Seat) and Hunter Under Saddle (Hunt Seat).

Note: Points will be deducted if participants use notes during oral reasons presentations.
