ENG2DGrade 10 English, Academic – Course Outline

Description/Rationale: This course extends the range of analytic reading, writing, oral communication, and thinking skills that students need for success in secondary school academic programs. Students will study and interpret challenging texts from contemporary and historical periods, including novels, poems, plays, and opinion pieces, and will analyze and create effective media works. An important focus will be the thoughtful use of spoken and written language.

This course emphasizes core reading and writing skills as well as correct usage and style. The culminating unit draws on the knowledge and skills learned throughout the course. The chronology of the units listed may vary among sections based on book availability.

ENG2D Units of Study

Unit 1 / Coming of Age Multi-Genre Unit and Review of Core Skills / Texts: SightLines 10, Resourcelines, a selection of short fiction, non-fiction and coming of age films; media targeting a youth audience (internet, magazines, etc.) / Introduction to writing in various forms:journal writing supported opinion and essay writing; diagnostic reading/writing testing.Review of elements of style, usage and spelling. Viewing and analysis of films and other media sources related to the theme of coming of age; creative writing activities and/or film review assignment.
Unit 2 / Novel Study or Literature Circle Novel Study / Texts: The Jade Peony, Duddy Kravitz, Funny Boy, The Kite Runner, A Complicated Kindness, Catcher in the Rye, Lord of the Flies, Rule of the Bone / Teacher led and /or small group study of a chosen novel; critical and creative writing activities related to the novels; group seminar and individual research essay on a social issue related to the novels.

Unit 4 / Drama: Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet / Text: Romeo and Juliet / Reading and viewing of the play (in-class film versions and possible field trip); modernization of the play in a new setting and/or locale; group presentation and individual media creation.
Unit 5 / Culminating Activity: Bildungsroman / Texts: individual personal novel and texts covered in course / Individual and small group investigation into several different genres related to the theme of coming of age. Library and internet research, independent reading; seminar presentation and media creation.
