Dear Senior Parents:

TWINSBURGHIGH SCHOOL SENIOR EXPERIENCE

TwinsburgHigh School offers its senior students the opportunity to participate in an invaluable Senior Experience. The Twinsburg High School Senior Experience will allow senior students, during the second semester of their senior year, an opportunity to experience a real-world work environment as they shadow a professional in their chosen field at a worksite outside the school setting. This program enables students to see, first hand, the necessary “soft skills”, professionalism, and work ethics that research indicates students need greater exposure to for work and college readiness. The experience encourages TwinsburgHigh School seniors to reflect and be better prepared to make decisions regarding their futures. The senior experience will serve as a culmination of their academic experiences at TwinsburgHigh School. Students who have taken advantage of this opportunity in the past have always reported how beneficial and eye-opening the experience has been. Information can be found at News You Can Use on the Twinsburg High School Web Site or on Mrs. Houston’s Web Site under Senior Experience.

Students who apply and are approved to participate in the experience will no longer report to Twinsburg High School for classes after Friday, May 2, 2014. Students will be expected to report to their community job site for the remaining two and half weeks of their senior year between Monday, May 5, and Wednesday, May 21, 2014. After successful completion of the Thursday, May 22nd culminating presentation, participating students will be exempt from all final exams.

The following information serves as a brief outline describing expectations and eligibility for students interested in participating in this program.

  1. The work must be voluntary; there may be no compensation of any kind. Students may not work for, or be supervised by, a family member or relative. Students may not complete their shadowing experience in a business or organization where they are currently, or were employed.
  2. All students must report to their job sites a minimum of 60 hours during the 2 1/2 week period.

(A signed daily log sheet will be kept.)

  1. Student will enlist the help of a THS staff member who will serve as their advisor throughout the senior experience. On-going communication with the advisor is mandatory.
  2. Participation in the culminating presentation/symposium on Thursday, May 22, 2014 (6:30-8:00 pm) is required. Parents, THS advisor, and job site supervisors are encouraged to attend. A 5-7 minute oral presentation is required of all participants.
  3. Students must meet all academic eligibility requirements. (Passage of all OGT’s prior to January 7, 2014, a minimum of 22 credits earned by January 7, 2014, a minimum of a 2.0 GPA must be maintained during the first three marking periods of the student’s senior year, and no behavioral referrals which led to out-of-school suspensions during their senior year.)
  4. It is the responsibility of the student to find his/her job site supervisor and to request a THS instructor to sponsor him/her throughout their experience.

Applications for The Senior Experience will be available to students in Mrs. Houston’s Room B206 or at Applications will be due back to Mrs. Houston (Room B206) for approval by Tuesday, April 1, 2014. Finding a job site supervisor and completing the application early is highly recommended, as this can be time-consuming. If you have any questions regarding The Senior Experience, please contact Mr. Silverthorn, THS Assistant Principal or Mrs. Houston, Senior Experience Advisor.

Sincerely,

Louise Teringo Michael Silverthorn Donna Houston
