President’s Message 2017 / 2018

Welcome to all our new and existing members for the 2017 / 2018 swimming season. I firstly want to thank the committee in advance, for the work they will be putting in for this new season and am grateful to see new members on this committee with most of the positions having an assistant to make the workload a little easier on each member and also to bring new and fresh ideas into the club. Your committee works tirelessly behind the scenes to make your club a success all year round so I ask that you give them all the support you can. Please remember we are all volunteers.

We could not ask for better support for this club than the wonderful coaching team coupled with the very professional learn to swim program Shelly runs here at Yeronga. With a little more visual awareness and contact with younger swimmers we are hoping that we will be able to encourage more swimmers to join our club and with assistance from the coaches, swim teachers and pool staff I am very confident this is going to be a very successful and fun year.

We are making a few changes to club this year and welcome any feedback from parents and swimmers on these changes. Starting at 6.15 will hopefully encourage a few more swimmers to join in on club nights and the earlier start also sees us having nominations open via an online system or Team App prior to club night so this will help the smooth running of club nights to ensure that we start on time. Championships will now also be held on Saturday 24th March. I want to ensure that club nights are fun for all!!

Again this year we are lucky enough to be able to host our A Grade meet in October and Novice Meet in November which we are proud to now call the Shelly Douyere Novice Meet. I ask that we all chip in and help to make these meets as successful as they have been in the past. We rely on parents and swimmer support for these meets and thank you in advance for your help.

Once again we have the great honour of having foundation members Mrs. Hazel O’Brien and Mr. Russell Henry and now also have the added honour of welcoming Shelly Douyere as the Patrons on our club.

Our swimmers are our most important asset and obviously the reason we are all in the club and we all endeavour to ensure that they will all have a wonderful, rewarding and most importantly, a fun time this season. Hard work but fun – success will come from hard work but we also want to make sure everyone has a year packed with wonderful memories, fun times, great friendships and success in the pool. We want all parents to feel a part of the family and the best way to do this is to lend a hand on club night. It is a great way to get to know the rest of the Yeronga Park families. Join in the Fun. We are very fortunate to have Ted Curtis and Alan Waite kindly coming along every club night and are more than happy to share their wealth of knowledge and assistance with anyone who is interested to learn more about officiating.

Each year I say that I really want club members to feel they have a say in what happens to their club. I would again like to get suggestions from both swimmers and parents as to what they would like to see happen within the club. Please come and have a chat with me or any of the other committee members. We are only too happy to discuss anything with you. We are there to help!! Looking forward to this season and seeing you all on pool deck.

Swim, hard, fast and strong but most importantly have fun doing it!

Craig Rogers
President

Coach’s Report 2017 / 2018

The busy 2017/18 season is about to begin and plans are in place to maintain Yeronga Park’s reputation as a high profile club. We are a team that other club’s set their benchmarks by. Yeronga Park Swimming Club competes in the prestigious Premier Division of the Brisbane Swimming Association and competes in local club meets right through to International competitions.

In the last season, our swimmers have competed successfully locally, nationally and internationally. In 2017, Yeronga Park will be proudly represented by Rowan Crothers as he heads to the Para World Championships in Mexico City. At a National level our club competed at the Australian Open and Age Championships and Australian Open Short Course Championships in our home town of Brisbane. We also had a successful team compete at the Australian Open Water Championships in Adelaide. Not only can we boast about our elite swimmers but about the great structure we have in place to develop and nurture the younger swimmers in our club.

During the last season, we had great success with our junior programs. This is due to the dedication and commitment shown by our coaches Alberto Lantieri, Kate Irvine, Teagan Rogers, Clay Douyere-Pate, Reed Douyere-Pate and Will Blanco. We have a great bunch of young swimmers working hard in the pool and with a little encouragement we should see our junior numbers in the club continue to increase and grow in strength. Our strength and conditioning program run by Paul Heffernan continues to produce excellent results. The coaching and support staff who are leading the team this season are enthusiastic and passionate and I am sure will continue to nurture our swimmers and uphold the Yeronga Park spirit.

Thank you to Craig Rogers who again takes on the role of leading our club as President. Mandy Fordham takes on the job of Treasurer looking after our financialaffairs this season. Together with Shelly Douyere and Warren Cook (Co-Vice Presidents), Jean Davison (Secretary), Ange Wall (Chief Recorder), Tammy Brosnan (Registrar), Howard Friend (Meet Coordinator) and Jayne Burton (Race Secretary) our committee will steer the club into the new season. We are pleased to have Life Members Russell Henry, Hazel O’Brien and Shelly Douyere as our Patrons.

Parental support is ever so vital in the successful running of a club. We have an excellent and enthusiastic band of parents in our club and now it’s up to them to work closely with the coaches and the committee for the benefit of our greatest asset - our swimmers.

This season we will be running our 20th Annual Shelly Douyere 12 years and under Novice Meet in November. This meet is vital to the development of our younger swimmers and I strongly encourage everyone to participate. This season the coaching staff will target meets for our seniors and juniors. Toowoomba and the Yeronga Park Long Course Preparation Meets are two interclub competitions where we will be out in force. The Queensland Championships will be held in December. There will be lead up meets from the QSA and BSA that we will attend as preparation for the major meets.

The Australian Open Championships will be held in Southport in March 2018 and double as the Commonwealth Games Selection Trials. The Australian Age & multiclass Championships (13-18yrs) will be held a little later in Sydney, April 2018.

I would like to welcome new members to the squads and club and encourage all families to support the functions, and particularly our club nights during the season. Our club is highly regarded nationally and internationally, particularly for promoting swimming from the developmental or teaching stage through to local, State, National and International levels. Our coaches are fully accredited with the Australian Coaches Association. Our number one priority to all club members, no matter what level of competition they are part of, is to enjoy and love what they are doing and to promote swimming at all times as a happy healthy sport to participate in. I am sure that we can all look forward to a successful season ahead.

Head Coach

Joining the Club

Joining the club is done on-line via the Swimming Queensland or Yeronga Park Swim Club websites. Simply go to click on the JOIN NOW! Button. You can use the on-line method to join the club provided you have never been registered with another club that is affiliated Swimming Queensland.

However if you belong to another club simply contactour club’s Registrar and provide your membership number, which, you can obtain from your current club or Swimming Queensland. A request will then be made to transfer to Yeronga Park.

Club Nights

Swim club nights are on a fortnightly basis conducted on Wednesday evenings in the 50m pool and commence at 6.15pm sharp. All races are swum in a friendly non-threatening environment because we want to ensure everyone has fun. We endeavour to organise races according to each swimmer’s level. Boys and girls swim together because you simply race against your own time each club night. Points will be given for attendance and performance at club nights and these points will go towards awards at the end of our season.

*Nominations for club nights are now done online prior to the night but we can make changes prior to 6.00pm if needed.

Before progressing to longer distances swimmers must be able to swim their current distance under a specific times, the promotion times are listed in this booklet.

On club night we need help with timekeeping and other official duties. Our pool deck organisers will be more than happy to teach you how to timekeep etc. All assistance is greatly appreciated and it allows you, as parents to become involved in your child’s sport and it is a fantastic way to get to know everyone.

BBQ Dinner

Each club night we have a barbeque that has been a major fundraiser for a number of seasons. This season there will be a roster for volunteers. We invite club members to come along and assist with our BBQ. If everyone can help at just one or two club nights during the season the burden will be shared. Food and drinks will be available from around 5.30pm - 7.00pm each club night. So parents will still see their children swim.

Championship Distances

Club Championships
6years & Under / 25 Metres in all four strokes
7years / 25 Metres in all four strokes
8years & Over / 50 Metres in all four strokes
To be eligible to swim and earn points at Championships, swimmers must have completed swimming at four club nights or 3 club nights and one swim meet and be a financial member.

Swim Meets

As a club we are well represented at all the Brisbane and Queensland Swim Meets. Most club members also participate in meets held by other clubs during the season. Information on all targeted swim meets, as they come through, is put up on the notice boards. For the past couple of seasons, our team has competed in force at the Toowoomba Flyers Swim Meet in October. Targeted meets are the swim meets that coaching staff target, they include most of the BSA/QSA Meets.

A question frequently is “What should I go in?”. It is my belief to nominate in all four strokes unless I have particularly advised swimmers to miss out on an event for a particular purpose. This is rarely the case. We train to compete in all four strokes and I think it’s also a waste of time sitting out an event at a meet just because it’s not your preferred stroke. This is particularly important for all our 13yrs & under swimmers who should target all strokes.

The QSA and BSA calendar have many meets scheduled and our major focus will be on the State Championships from the 9th – 15th December 2017, the Brisbane Senior Metropolitan Championships 23rd – 25th February 2018, and the Brisbane Junior Metropolitan Championships 10th – 11th March 2018.

This year Brisbane Swimming has allocated all Brisbane Clubs to specific meets. This means there is no longer flexibility to attend other club meets as you wish. The online system will not allow swimmers to enter a meet which Yeronga Park has not been allocated. All entries for BSA club meets are now completed using the Online Meet Entry tool.

Targeted Club Meets

As a swimming club we will "target" certain swim meets during the year, which, is where we like as many swimmers to participate as possible. These meets are always a lot of fun because of the great participation. The swimmers get the chance to support their team mates and the parents also get the time to sit and chat with other parents. When we swim at Chandler for Brisbane Swimming meets swimmers can gain premiership points for our club.

These "targeted" meets are listed later in this booklet and posted on our noticeboard on the brick wall near the clubroom (deep end of the pool). We also send out notifications to remind club members when nominations are due. Nominations are then either done on-line or done through our Race Secretary.

To nominate for targeted meets which are not online:

  1. Email the relevant club requesting the TM file and flyer 2 weeks before closing date (TM is the software clubs use).
  2. Email this file and flyer to our race secretary at th the Event Numbers, best time if you have swum before. (e.g. Event 5 50m Free 48.15).
  3. Deposit nomination fee into club bank account

Club Run Swim Meets

Yeronga Park A Grade Long Couse Qualifying Meet on 8thOctober 2017

The club will be running its second long course A Grade Qualifying meet on the 8 October. This swim meet will give not only our swimmers but also other swimmers from other BSA affiliated swim clubs the opportunity to qualify for the upcoming Brisbane Metropolitan and Queensland Championships.

We are asking for all club members’ to again support this meet and with the 25 metre pool as a great warm down pool we will get the opportunity to show swimmers from other clubs the wonderful surrounds in which we train and compete in at our club nights.

The Shelly Douyere 12 Years & Under Novice Meet on 4th November 2017

We will be conducting our 20th Annual Yeronga Park Novice Swim Meet this year.

We are asking for your support once again for this wonderful meet. This meet allows younger and less experienced swimmers to compete in a swim meet environment. We also have our older and elite swimmers helping out on the day as well as officials, volunteers and presenters.
