The focus of the English Language Development Program is greater English fluency and comprehension through practice in listening, speaking, reading and writing. The classroom teacher will provide assignments and evaluations aimed at improving fluency and comprehension of the English Language.

Homework will normally be assigned four nights a week. The development of literacy at home is strongly recommended and should be considered an essential part of English Language Development, and the acquisition of literacy. Parents/guardians need to provide the students with adequate time and a quiet place to read and complete homework assignments. Daily practice and exposure to English is recommended. We encourage parents/family members to participate in our English Language Parent Meetings to learn how to help your child develop literacy at home and at school

Those English Language Learners needing an electronic translator (English/Spanish) will be issued one to assist them in their classes at CanyonHigh School.

The textbooks used in the program are:

Basic English Grammar

Milestone Textbook series

Various supplemental materials will be used in order to meet the standards set for English Language Development by the State of California. All English Language Learners will also be utilizing technology through individual and group projects using classroom computers.

Students are responsible for all textbooks and the electronic translator (if applicable) assigned to them. These items must be returned at the end of the school year or in the event of the student checking out of school before the school year terminates. Replacement costs are the responsibility of the student in the event of a lost or damaged book or electronic translator.

Students will progress through the English Language Development Program at varying speeds. All students in the program will have (2) hours of English Language Arts instruction daily until the student is redesignated from LEP, Limited English Proficient to FEP, Fluent English Proficient. Redesignation is an ongoing process with formal evaluations completed annually.

Behavior: Learning a new language is an undertaking that requires hard work and patience. The classroom atmosphere must be conducive to learning. Discipline problems interrupt the learning process and will be addressed following CanyonHigh School’s Discipline Policies. Those include phone calls home, class period suspension (O. R.) and parent conferences.

Grades will be assigned using a point system. Each assignment will be given a specific point value. The students’ points earned will be converted into a percentage of total points assigned. The grades will be figured as 90% and above =A, 80-89% =B, 70-79% =C, 60-69% =D, 59% and below Fail. Students absent from class 15 days or more are subject to failing the course. Parents and students will be notified in writing when student have been absent from class 10 days.
