Potential Practicum Sites for CPCP Students
February 1, 2009
Listed below are potentially available sites for practicum placement for CPCP students. Students are not restricted to the following sites and in fact are encouraged to consider other sites of interest. If there is a site of interest to you that is not included on this list, please contact the practicum instructor (for a required practicum) or your advisor (for a supplemental practicum) for guidance.
Regardless of whether sites of interest are or are not on this list, students seeking a site for a required practicum should stay in touch with their practicum instructor regarding their site plans and interests. Required practica are as follows:
3750: 795 - students in their third year in the Department of Psychology
5600: 702 – students in their second year in the Department of Counseling
3750: 796 - students in their fourth year in the Department of Psychology
5600: 796 – students in their third year in the Department of Counseling
The timeline for all sites is roughly: application material due the end of February, review of material and interviews through the beginning of April (sites know when spring break is, but they may forget), with offers made around April 13. An exception to this timetable is Baldwin Wallace which is currently accepting applications and will probably make selections well before April.
Students seeking a site for a supplemental practicum should first gain the approval of their advisor, with whom the field experience would be registered. Typically, the advisor will discuss with the student his/her interests, goals, and progress toward other program requirements, as well as consult with the student's most recent practicum supervisor about readiness for the desired placement. With advisor approval, students may apply to sites that are eligible for supplemental practicum only at any time. *However, students may not apply to sites eligible for both required and supplemental practicum (EXCEPT for CTCC, with whom we have a special arrangement) until they have received clearance to do so by the Practicum Coordinator, Dr. Hardin. The reason for this is to allow students’ required practica needs to be met before supplemental ones.
When you have accepted a practicum site, please immediately inform Dr. Hardin and your practicum supervisor (required practicum) or advisor (supplemental practicum). If you accept a required or supplemental practicum placement at one site before hearing back from another at which you have also applied, please contact the remaining site to withdraw your application. Finally, remember that accepting an offer for practicum placement is a professional commitment. As in the internship and job market, once you've accepted an offer you should not back out. This is important both for students' own professionalism and for maintaining our positive relationships with practicum agencies, whose planning is contingent upon the number and characteristics of the incoming practicum cohort.

Brief Description: The CounselingCenter is a comprehensive university counseling center providing services to a diverse student body. Staff members are strongly committed to training and to fostering the personal and professional growth of trainees. Practicum counselors provide individual psychotherapy, career and educational counseling, assessment, and programming to the university community. Students receive intensive supervision from senior staff psychologists and interns from the APA-accredited pre-doctoral internship program. Training sessions are held to familiarize practicum counselors with issues that are relevant to a college population and to prepare them for activities they will be engaged in during practicum. Brief Description: The site offers opportunities to provide individual and group counseling, preventive/outreach programming, consultation, and crisis intervention services. Students participate in two hours each week of group supervision that includes case presentations, informal case conferences, and training seminars. A unique feature of the training program is a collaborative relationship with the Baldwin-WallaceHealthCenter.

Brief Description: The clinical placement involves 15-20 hours per week of supervised experience in individual, couples and group psychotherapy, neuropsychological assessment and psychoeducational programming. Student trainees carry approximately 5 psychotherapy cases and receive training in neuropsychological assessment of learning disabilities and attention deficit disorder. Trainees are expected to complete 2 neuropsychological assessments per semester and conduct 2 psychoeducational programs per academic year. Trainees have the opportunity to co-lead therapy groups. Weekly face-to-face, individual supervision is provided for psychotherapy. In addition, weekly group supervision is provided for psychotherapy and testing. Supervision is provided by licensed psychologists and a neuropsychologist. Weekly attendance at clinical case conferences, held on Thursday mornings from 9:00-10:30 am, is expected for a minimum of one semester.

Brief Description: Portage Path Behavioral Health is the largest mental health provider in SummitCounty. It offers a wide range of mental health services including inpatient treatment and outpatient treatment (psychiatric, psychotherapy, groups psychological testing). Brief Description: Neurology and Neuroscience Associates is a medically based practice providing a continuum of care for individuals with neurological disorders ranging in age from adolescence through adulthood. This is an assessment-only site where students will receive training and supervision from a neuropsychologist who has worked with CPCP students in the past. Neuropsychological assessment services are provided for a wide variety of neurological diagnoses such as brain injury, stroke, Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, multiple sclerosis, seizure disorders, sleep disorders and attention deficit disorder and psychiatric disorders such as depression, bipolar disorder and schizophrenia. The student will be expected to spend at least one full day a week (i.e., 9-5) doing testing and scheduling additional time for supervision. To be eligible, students MUST have completed Objectives and Intelligence Testing prior to starting the placement; preference will be for more advanced students. Students who complete this practica will learn how to administer a variety of neuropsychological tests.

Brief Description: NEPRC is a minimum/medium security women’s prison located in Cleveland. The mental health department is fully staffed with three psychologists, three psychiatric nurses and two prescribers (a psychiatrist and clinical nurse specialist). NEPRC is a unique practicum site due to the richness of clinical experiences encountered. The mental health problems range from adjustment disorders to schizophrenia, with a particular focus on dual diagnosis and trauma issues. There is also the opportunity to gain considerable experience in group therapy as it is the treatment of choice for this population. Other clinical opportunities include individual counseling, interdisciplinary treatment teams, consultations to security staff, psychological assessments and evaluations and crisis intervention.
