[1] The German statistical offices do not possess microdata of the 1961 Census. (For aggregated (tabular) census data see Alternatively the 1962 microcensus (ZUMA-File) is documented here. Important note: There are no data for the federal states Saarland and West-Berlin in the ZUMA-Files for 1962 and 1963. At present it is still to be checked whether the 1962 microcensus data tapes of the German Federal Statistical Office can be read.
[2] The German statistical offices do not possess microdata of the 1970 Population and Occupational Census. Here, the ZUMA-File (1 percent sample based on the 10 percent survey with supplementary questions) is documented.
[3] Concerning the basic programme (questionnaire and variables) the Microcensuses 1980 and 1982 are almost identical. The main differences are: (1) Only in 1980 respondents were asked whether their current occupation was based on their learnt occupation (yes, partially, no: change of occupation, other reasons, no vocational training). (2) Only since 1982 respondents are asked about their position in the enterprise (hierarchy ). Since this is an important variable to construct socio-economic classifications most users would prefer to choose the 1982 microcensus.
[4] The new eastern German states were included starting with the 1991 microcensus. The 1991 microcensus includes more socio-demographic and socio-economic variables than the 1992 survey due to the supplementary programme. Therefore, the 1991 microcensus is documented here. (see Microcensus Survey Programme 1957-2004)
[5] Concerning the preference of the 2000 microcensus over the 2002 survey see note above.
[6] Indicated by a question mark, the sampling size of the files from the German Federal Statistical Office for ICM-Europe depends on the anonymization concept.

[8] The questionnaire of the 1962 microcensus includes a question about occupation. However, this variable ist not included in the ZUMA file.
