How to properly dribble and shoot
a basketball
How to properly dribble a basketball:
Here´s all you´ll need: a basketball; a safe, level area with a hard surface.
1st Take the ball and start bouncing it in front of you.
2ND Don´t slap the ball with your hand! Instead, use your fingertips and try to push the ball.
3rd Once you feel more control, start walking and dribbling at the same time. Begin dribbling in front of you and also towards the sides, always keeping control of the ball!
4th As you advance with dribbling, try to do it with the other hand as well. Next, try to dribble around placed obstacles (such as cones). After that, try running and dribbling at the same time.
How to properly shoot a basketball:
Before we begin, we´ll need a basketball; a hard, level, safe area; and a basketball hoop.
1st Let´s take a look at the proper way to hold the basketball:
- Hold the sides of the ball with both hands.
- Put your shooting hand on top of the ball and you other hand slightly on the side.
- The side hand is very important in keeping the ball in your shooting hand.
2nd When you release the ball you want to have backspin on it! It´s believed that the backspin will keep the ball on the rim longer. It´s easier to control your shot with backspin.
Take a look at some types of basic shots:
1. Short Shot: mostly used at the foul line. Square your body with the rim and bend your knees. As you straighten up direct the ball toward the rim, guiding it with your fingers.
2. Jump shot (or high shot): the most common outside shot in basketball. When ready to shoot, square your body with the rim, and as you jump into the air, you follow through with your shot toward the basket.
