Native American Book Report

Parents and students please read over this together and sign, detach, and return the bottom portion of the second page to school by Wednesday, Nov. 4th .

While working on your Indian tribe book report you will be learning how to take notes. This is an involved skill and will improve over time. At this point, you are working on your ability to identify the main ideas and the supporting details.

You will use at least 2 different sources of information. One will be the book you are reading about your tribe. Another may be a source from the internet, using the search engines that Mrs. Zottnick showed you on the Lakeview website or a reference book. We encourage you to stretch and go beyond these required sources. Be sure to keep track of all your sources using the following guidelines.

Book: Author. Title. City:publisher. Copyright date. (in this order)

Example

Stone, Amy. Native American Peoples: Creek. Milwaukee; Gareth Stevens Publishing. 2005

Internet:

Website address “URL” from the page you found the information

Example

http://encarta.msn.com/encyclopedia_761565411/Crazy_Horse.html

Reference Books: Author, title, City: publisher, copyright date

Example

Griffin-Pierce, Trudy. The Encyclopedia of Native America. New York: Penguin Group. 1995

This will not be a written report but rather an oral presentation of your information. The written part of the project will be the notes you take and the bibliography information.

This week we will begin to take notes in class. As you read about your tribe outside of class, please continue to take notes the same way in which we are writing them in class.

When you finish reading and researching, you will create an example of your tribe’s shelter, clothing, food, transportation, and five interesting facts written on student created feathers.

All of these items and an index card with your bibliography information will be placed in a brown paper grocery bag, clearly labeled with your tribes name and your own.

The report (bag and completed items) will be due Monday, November 23rd.

The various items that you make will go in the bag. Exceptions might include the model of the shelter.

Your book report will include:

1)  Decorate a brown grocery bag with symbols, illustrations, etc. about your tribe. Make sure your name and the name of the tribe are on the bag and easily read.

2)  Make an example of an article of clothing your tribe wore. You may decorate it with beads, feathers, etc.

3)  Make or provide an example of the type of transportation they used and why this mode was practical in their environment.

4)  Show an example of the food they ate and tell why it was important.

5)  Show an artifact that pertains to your tribe. This may be hand made.

6)  Five feathers. Make 5 feathers (from paper) and write a fact on each that you have not covered in one of the categories. Remember to use complete sentences.

7.) Include the “bibliography” index card we began in class with all your sources clearly

written. Include your name on this card.

Be sure to include ALL of these items, as they hold a point value toward your total grade on this project.
