Introductory Note

Mahua, Mahula, Hippe or Mohua (Madhuca indica) is Kalpvriksha (The Wish Tree) of India. Since time immemorial Mahua is present in surroundings as tree of medicinal as well as religious importance. All parts of Mahua even the insects and mites visiting the tree are used as life saving medicines. The ancient literature related to different systems of medicine in India (and also the world), mentions hundreds of Mahua based Herbal Formulations. But still major part of Traditional Medicinal Knowledge related to Mahua is still waiting for documentation. From common diseases like cough, cold and lumbago to complicated and so-called incurable diseases like Sickle Cell Anemia and Haemophilia are successfully managed by the expert Mahua Healers. Mahua is present as top ten herbal ingredient in the list of promising Indigenous Traditional Medicines used by the Traditional Healers expert in managing Diabetes specially Revitalization of Pancreas and Tubeculosis.

Pankaj Oudhia is documenting Traditional Medicinal Knowledge about this important tree species since year 1990. He has collected information about thousands of Herbal Formulations with its merits and demerits. He stayed with expert Mahua Healers for many months in order to understand the Madhuca Science of Healing. He has noted that Mahua based Formulations are still much popular among the Healers and the innovative Young Healers are enriching it with their experiences. They are adding new ingredients in Traditional Formulations and experimenting with Alien species like Parthenium and common garden species.

After 22 years of surveys, in year 2012 Pankaj Oudhia is presenting the work on Mahua with the help of Pankaj Oudhia’s Medicinal Plant Database. The present document shows the list of selected topics on Mahua based Traditional Herbal Formulations discussed in the database.
