Make-up Work
If your child is absent, expect a blue Make-up Work sheet to come home with your child on his/her first day back. Attached to this sheet will be all notes to go home, assignments, plus page numbers for workbook assignments. When you report your child’s absence, you can request homework be sent home with a sibling or be placed in the office for pick-up. Please return completed assignments within two days. Thank-you!
Friday Folder and Progress Report
On Fridays your child will bring home a yellow Friday Folder with a Weekly Progress Report inside. Please look over the graded papers and the progress report and discuss them with your child. Please have your child return the folder to school on Monday morning with a signature on the progress report. There is a space for you to write comments or questions if you have any at that time.
Student of the Week
Every student will have one week of the school year dedicated to him/her. During that week the entire class will get to know the student a bit more due to a presentation on Friday afternoon. (A poster will be sent home the weekend before being Student of the Week to complete and return on Monday.)
Origo Math
The Common Core State Standards Initiative is an effort designed to improve educational outcomes for students by developing a set of common, internationally-benchmarked academic standards in mathematics for students K-12. The goal is to give the students a curriculum that allows them to study fewer concepts at a deeper level. Illinois is one of 45 states that have adopted these standards. Last year, beginning in third grade, students were given a new standardized test called PARCC (Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers) which determines whether students are meeting expectations.
This will be the fifth year we are implementing the Common Core Math Standards. The four domains consist of Operations and Algebraic Thinking, Numbers and Base Ten, Measurement and Data, and Geometry. Mental math strategies, problem solving and critical thinking are significant features of the standards. Learning strategies for understanding and remembering addition and subtraction facts are developed throughout the year. As we move through the year, math homework may consist of fact practice.
Math Flashcards-Weekly or biweekly paper flashcards will be sent home. Those will be the facts we’re focusing on for the week. When you receive these flashcards please cut them out and place them in a baggie or envelope. Have your child review those facts every evening 4-5 times. On Friday there will be a Math Fact Assessment on those facts provided.
Reading/Writing=English Language Arts
This block will be taught to your child by Mrs. Urbaniak. A hand out was distributed at Parent Orientation. Please let me know if you did not receive a copy.
Social Studies/Science
Social Studies and Science topics are often integrated into our literacy time. Topics of study include: Communities and our World, Our Heritage, Owls, Plants and Nature, and Ocean studies. We will be piloting two Science units during the year that incorporate the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS).
Homework/Assignment Notebooks
Homework will be assigned every evening, Monday-Thursday, by
Mrs. Urbaniak (ELA) and myself (Math and Science). My assignments will consist of the following:
Monday-Math Fact Review, study flashcards
Tuesday- Math Fact Review, study flashcards
Wednesday- Math Fact Review, study flashcards
Thursday- Math Fact Review, study flashcards
Friday-NO HOMEWORK!
Report Cards
The major subjects in second grade will include Math, Language Arts (Reading and Writing), Science, and Social Studies. Grades for Science and Social Studies will be given twice a year. The first quarter ends on October 21st, the first report card will go home with students on November 4th, and Parent Teacher Conferences will take place on November 21st and 22nd.
Handwriting
Students will be using a handwriting series titled “Handwriting without Tears.” We will spend 10-15 minutes a day on lessons provided in a workbook.
Behavior Clip Chart/Walking Ticket
Located in the front of the room on the chalkboard is our Behavior Clip Chart. We will be using the clip chart to monitor classroom behavior and choices.
Whole Class Reward System
A piece of graph paper is posted on the chalkboard. Squares are
colored in depending on good hallway and classroom behavior.
The students know what reward they are earning. It’s spelled out in
the squares.
PBIS
Positive Behavior Intervention System
The entire district has adopted a behavior system called PBIS.
Students are rewarded for following the four expectations:
Be Safe
Be Caring
Be Respectful
Be Here, Be Ready
The expectations are posted in the back of the classroom and the Mustang Must-Dos have been explained. The students know the consequences if they don’t follow the expectations. Students earn Mighty Mustang Money (individual) and Corral Team Tickets (classroom) for good behavior. After students accumulate behavior tickets they can turn them in for different rewards.
Book Orders
Book order forms will be given out on a monthly basis. If you would like to make an order, please fill out the form(s) and return them by the due date. Online ordering is also available. There will be a code on the forms when they come home for online ordering. Once I receive all of the orders I call it in and it takes about a week for the books to arrive. The Book Fair then comes to Oak Ridge in October and March.
Birthday Binder
When it’s your child’s birthday he/she will come home with the Birthday Binder. Please complete the journal log and return it the next day. The game worksheets may be kept at home.
Field Trips
We usually take two field trips throughout the school year. At this time we are in the process of planning those field trips and you will receive information on them as it becomes available. If you are interested in chaperoning you can let me know by checking that spot on your child’s permission slip when they come home. We are restricted as to how many adults we can take on each trip and chaperones will need to pay for themselves. A lottery system is used if we have more volunteers than needed.
Please have your child bring in a sock to use as an eraser for when we use the dry erase boards. If your looking for something to do with those socks that don’t have any matches (even if they have holes) please send then in as a donation to the class. We would really appreciate it!
