REHN FAMILY RESEARCH AWARD

Purpose

The purpose of the Rehn Family Research Award (RFRA) is to support the development of research careers of junior faculty, clinical and postdoctoral fellows, residents, graduate students, and medical students who are affiliated with the Department of Internal Medicine.

The RFRA supports one year of research for eligible participants in the broad areas of hypertension and arteriosclerosis, especially projects that have potential for future federal funding.

Objectives

Objectives of this award include: 1) increase interest in research among fellows, graduate students, residents, and medical students; 2) encourage research oriented trainees to develop skills and gain experience in methods and experimental approaches required to conduct research; 3) encourage research oriented trainees to develop skills and experience in grant writing; and 4) assist junior faculty members with pilot funding for projects that have potential for federal funding.

Funding Level

The award amount varies per year and is contingent upon investment performance. The 2015RFRA provides up to $16,000of support for two projects for a period of one year. These funds may be divided among two or more investigators. Applicants who demonstrate substantial progress may apply for one additional year of funding, contingent upon available funds. All renewals are competitive. The funding period begins July 1, 2015.

Letter of Intent

A Letter of Intent (LOI) and biographical sketches for all key personnel should be submitted to the Department of Internal Medicine Research Governance Committee (RGC) for review and approval prior to the submission of a full application. Please submit LOI and biographical sketches to Angela Duke,Department of Internal Medicine, ML 0551 or by email to:. The deadline for LOI and biographical sketches is May1, 2015.

The LOI should include a brief description of the research proposal including a) the title and specific aims of the project, b) significance, c) background, and d) research design.

The LOI should also include contact information for the Principal Investigator and information on the applicant’s stage of career development and career objectives. It should be one page or less in length.

Biographical Sketch

Biographical sketches, in NIH format, for the PI, key personnel, and Sponsor should be included with the LOI.

Application Process

Applications should be prepared using the RFRA Grant Application. Applications submission deadline is June 1, 2015.

The application should contain the following information.

Type of Award – Indicate whether the application is for a pilot project award or small project award. The intent of a pilot project is to obtain new grant funding and it requires Sponsor information.

Junior faculty members are eligible for the pilot project award. Clinical and postdoctoral fellows, residents, graduate students, and medical students are eligible for the small project award.

Summary of Proposed Research (Abstract) – Describe briefly the proposed research in the space allotted. Include a) specific aims, b) significance, c) background, and d) research design.

Key Personnel Engaged in Project – Please list all individuals who will contribute in an essential way to the scientific development or execution of the project.

Biographical Sketches – Biographical sketches, in NIH format, for the PI, key personnel, and Sponsor should be included with the application (if not included with the letter of intent).

Budget – Complete the budget for the 12-month period as outlined on the application form, including the budget justification. Funds may be used for supplies,Core equipment/services,animal usage costs, and the required grant writing seminar, or other workshops, if already taken by the awardee (pending approval by the RGC).

Other Support – Please provide data for the source, award type, period of award, role in project, and overlap for all funding held by the PI and the Sponsor.

Career Objectives – Describe your career objectives and how this award would assist you in achieving these objectives.

Proposed Research – Please include a description of the research proposal in three pages or less. Headings should include a) specific aims; b) background, significance, and rationale; c) preliminary data; and e) research design and methods. References, figures and other materials may be included in the appendix.

Description of the Project (in lay terms) for Public Information – Please describe the objectives of the project in terms that can be understood by a high school senior.

Facilities and Environment – Indicate how the necessary facilities and other resources will be made available for the research proposed in this application and career enhancement.

Evaluation

The following criteria will be used for reviewing applications.

  • Commitment to guidance of the applicant

Budget

  • Justification of the requested budget in relation to research aims

Award Notification

The RGC will notify all applicants of their decision within 30 days of the submission deadline.

Successful applicants are required to attend at least one grant writing seminar given by the Office of the Vice President for Research, William Ball, MD. Please contact Dawn O’Neill, Executive Director for Research Programs at for more details. The minimal cost of $100 should be reflected in the application budget. Awardees are also invited and encouraged to identify other training sessions that will directly contribute to their development as an investigator, or classes. These should be incorporated in the application as well, and in the budget as necessary.

A six-month and a final progress report must be submitted to the RGC for review. The reports should include a detailed list of expenditures and categories as listed on the application. Unused funds will be forfeited at the end of the award period and if the recipient leaves the department. Please contact the division budget/business manager for assistance.
