JOB TITLE: BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT MANAGER

  1. Purpose of the job:

Phoenix provides a popular programme of world cinema, digital arts, courses and community events in Leicester's Cultural Quarter. The cafe is a hub for many who live and work in city as well as cinema and gallery visitors. Many businesses and community organisations enjoy the stimulating contemporary environment for conferencing, training, networking and social events.

A high profile and rapidly developing cultural organisation, Phoenix stakeholders include Leicester City Council, De Montfort University and Arts Council England. The organisation has a turnover of £1.3 million and 45 staff.

We enjoy very high levels of customer loyalty and satisfaction and have established independent cinema and digital art as an important part of Leicester’s cultural life. A thriving economy of local digital artists and media practitioners is clustered around Phoenix.

Phoenix became a National Portfolio Organisation in 2012 and had a significant role in Leicester’s City of Culture 2017 plan providing the ambitious digital programme and contributing to bid preparation and presentation. We engage approximately 190,000 people annually in world cinema, digital arts, education, and business services.

The Business Development Manager is a key member of the management team leading fundraising that supports our creative programme and mission: “Open to all, Phoenix will be a thriving artistic and creative centre in Leicester with a reputation for high quality independent cinema and digital art. We will provide education and a stimulating environment that enables people to develop the inspiration, skills and relationships they need to achieve their goals.”

The Business Development Role is responsible for growing and developing grant, sponsorship and philanthropic income that supports and develops the creative programme of Phoenix.

Phoenix has been very successful in fundraising over the last 3 years achieving £874,500 of new grants, and is about to roll-out a new membership and loyalty scheme.Phoenix is successful applying as a lead organisation, as well as working with partners in collaborative awards.

The immediate focus of the roleis to lead several applications to foundations or trusts - typically targeting awards valued £150K or more over 2-3 years. A further and linked priority is to achieve £50K of matched funding for an Arts Council Catalyst award by June 2015.

  1. Main duties

Planning and Developing the Fundraising Programme

  • Influencing and informing our strategy and business plans, particularly with respect to fundraising.
  • Preparing and monitoring an annual fundraising activity plan that will fulfil Phoenix’s fundraising objectives.
  • Working with the CEO and CFO to develop best practice in fundraising and ensure compliance with relevant regulations.
  • Influencing the creative programme so that it fulfils our artistic mission and is more attractive to donors and sponsors.
  • Producing fundraising resources and tools for staff and Trustees.

Fundraising Activities

  • Researching and targeting funding agencies and charitable trusts, and then managing application deadlines and reporting dates for existing awards, with colleagues.
  • Writing grant-applications and sponsorship proposals and supporting colleagues in preparing grant applications and proposals.
  • Preparing and ensuring reports are provided to stakeholders as required by funding agreements.
  • Researching and targeting potential sponsors and then supporting and coordinating the direct engagement with them.
  • Representing Phoenix at appropriate events and through presentations and discussions, communicating the charitable aims and opportunities for potential donors to contribute.
  • Being the main contact for, and managing donor related enquires.
  • Supporting the individual membership and giving programme.

Other Responsibilities

  • Being a member of the Phoenix Creative Team, contributing to the wider development of the cultural programme.
  • Line-managing assistants and/or volunteers as required.
  • Developing your professional practice and skills with the CEO’s support.
  • Contributing to the development of Phoenix as a member of the management team.

3. Qualifications, skills, knowledge and personal qualities

Requirements / Essential / Desirable
Qualifications & Training / Degree in relevant discipline or substantial professional experience.
Satisfactory DBS check
/ Membership of relevant professional body.
Degree in the arts or other creative subject.
Experience & Achievement / Experience & achievement in a business development role, for example in leading successful grant applications of over £50K.
Achievement in leading or influencing collaborative applications to foundations, trusts and agencies.
Managing funded programmes through all stages of planning, organising, monitoring, evaluating and reporting to stakeholders.
Experience & achievement in partnership development. / Fundraising, sales and marketing in a cultural or education organisation.
Experience with individual donor and membership schemes.
Skills & Knowledge / Planning & organising skills; project and budget management.
Ability to think strategically - researching & developing funding opportunities that support strategic aims and generate significant financial contribution.
Creativity & innovation - ability to generate ideas and convert them into propositions.
Facilitation – ability to listen, and guide ideas drawing on the talents of others, towards a defined goal.
Ability to communicate effectively across business and cultural sectors.
Competent in office applications and database management. / Fundraising regulations & best practice.
