Principal’s Message

I am extremely excited to join the Sorters Mill Elementary community and family as the new principal. I look forward to getting to know the children, staff, and community throughout this year. As a career educator, I know that all children can learn, no matter what their challenges, as long as we as are committed and willing to take whatever steps are necessary to meet their needs.

The state has set the bar high for Sorters Mill and all schools during the next school year and they intend to raise it even higher over the next three to four years. In order to meet these challenges, we must raise our level of expectations and instruction, now! FOCUS on academics or as we will call it, the “Eye of the Tiger”, must be maintained throughout the school year. I hope you will use this phrase with your own child as you encourage them in their studies.

You will see some changes around Sorters Mill this school year, both academically and in how we function organizationally. We will keep you updated when one of these changes affect you or your child. One change I want to make you aware of now, is the After School Intervention program which will be implemented for our students in need. Struggling readers in the primary grades (K-2) will be a part of a six week program, two days a week, from late September to mid-November. Struggling third through fifth graders will be part of a 17 week program from late November until April. This program will be based upon small group differentiated instruction of no more than 5 students at a time. More details will be made available at a later date for students who will be a part of this program.

Finally, be involved in your child’s education! It makes a tremendous difference in a child’s success. Fathers, a special word for you, take the time to visit your son or daughter at school at least once or twice during the year. Research shows that children with involved mothers and fathers are much more likely to be successful in school and life. The difference it makes is truly amazing.

Again, I look forward to a GRRRRREAT school year and being a part of the Sorters Mill Elementary family.

EYE OF THE TIGER!
