The Parade of States
Goals:
- Create a model float that represents the characteristics of your state.
- Present your float to the class in the "Parade of States."
- Present information about your state to the class.
Directions:
- Bring in a shoe or sneaker box to class. [NO Boot Boxes!!]
- The box must be completely covered in construction or wrapping paper.
- Write your name and class period on the bottom of the box.
- Bring in supplies to decorate your float. NO GLITTER!
All supplies must be in a plastic bag with your name on the bag. The bag must be large enough to hold all of your supplies.
The following is a list of supplies for you to bring in to decorate your float:
- State flag
- A picture of the shape of your state
- 5 Items [pictures or mini models] that represent the unique Human-Cultural characteristics of your state: Cultural events, sports teams, famous buildings Examples: Florida: Disney, Miami Dolphins; New York: EmpireStateBuilding, Yankee Stadium; South Dakota: Mount Rushmore; Louisiana: Mardi Gras…. Look at your State Fact Sheet for ideas.
- 5 Items [pictures or mini models] that represent the unique physicalcharacteristics of your state: Physical formations: mountains, bodies of water, canyons; vegetation, climate, and natural resources.Examples: Florida: palm trees, orange groves, alligators, everglades; Georgia: peaches; Arizona: Grand Canyon….Look at your State Fact Sheet for ideas.
- Include these items in your supply bag
- Any arts and craft supplies that you would find helpful. NO GLITTER!!!
- Wheels or a toy with wheels so the float can move along in the parade. [optional]
- Thee name of your state must be typed/neatly printed on two long sides of your float
- Complete the "State Fact Sheet"
- Write a brief script [on a 3x5 card] that you will read as the float passes by the judge's table. The script must include information about your state and the importance of the items selected for your float and how they relate to your state. SeeState Fact Sheet for ideas.
All supplies and research will be acquired outside of school

Scoring Guide:
______Box and all supplies [including 10 items] are turned in on time.
______Name and class period written on the bottom of the box.
______Supplies [including 10 items] are in a plastic bag with your name on
the bag.
______Box is entirely covered
______State’s name is typed/neatly written on the 2 long sides of float.
______Float is decorated with10 or more Items that relate to your state's
human-cultural and physical characteristics.
______State Flag is displayed on the float
______A picture of your state’s shape is displayed on your float.
______Neatness, style and attention to detail
______On-task behavior [You will lose points for using supplies in an
inappropriatemanner].
______Script and reading of script and presentation of your float
______State Fact Sheet is complete and accurate

*You will lose 50 % of your grade if you fail to meet the due dates
Extra Credit:
Create and presenta 10-line song/poem/rap about your state. It must discuss at least 5 characteristics of your state, must be typed and will be due on: Monday, January 6.You will present this during the presentation of your float. You will not receive extra credit if you fail to follow the extra credit directions. Late songs will not be accepted.
