CLASS NEWS from ROOM 703

Week of September 28 – October 2

Morning Meeting:

  • We began each morning with a ‘good morning’ song. This week we learned the song “Hello Neighbor”
  • We practiced telling ONE sentence of news that we wanted to share with the class.

Writer's Workshop:

  • We began writing 3-page stories. We tell a little of our story on the first page, a little on the second page, and a little on the third page.
  • We reviewed that good writers THINK, PICTURE IN THEIR MIND, DRAW, WRITE WORDS, and COLOR.

Word Study and Literacy Tubs:

  • We sang ABC songs on the SMART board and read ABC stories.
  • We chose a ‘special child’ each day from our list of class names. For that child, we cheered their name, spelled their name, wrote their name on a class grid, and interviewed them to learn more about them.

Reader's Workshop:

  • Welearned about different things that good reading partners do.
  • Partners sit hip to hip.
  • Partners tell their stories by looking at their pictures.
  • Partners retell their stories to each other.
  • Partners talk about their favorite parts.
  • Partners find words that they know in their books.

Math:

  • We did our calendar each day, learning about numbers, months, our US flag, days of the week, weather, and counting.
  • We counted to 20 each day with the song “The Number Rock”.
  • We began learning about how to correctly form each number 1-10 by singing The Numeral Song.
  • We learned the similarities and differences in five shapes – circle, square, rectangle, triangle, and hexagon. We played the missing shape game.
  • We introduced pattern block puzzles in a tub.
  • We introduced birthday cakes and candles up to 20 in a tub.

Centers and Small Groups:

  • We opened the Sand Center.
  • We opened a Family Play set in our Lego Center.
  • We began making play-doh letters in the ABC Center.

Shared Reading:

  • We read the nursery rhyme “Humpty Dumpty” and read the big book My Home.
  • We learned two new popcorn words – my and like.
  • We thought of words that begin with “H”.
  • We reviewed periods and quotation marks.
  • We changed our voices for different characters as we read.

Interactive Read Aloud:

  • We readbooks about FALL and practiced envisioning (making a movie in our minds) and predicting.

STEM/STEAM DAY:

  • For our STEM/STEAM day we focused on Humpty Dumpty and homes.
  • Wemade our own Humpty Dumpties from real boiled eggs. We predicted how many blocks high our wall would need to be for him to crack when he fell. Our class wall had to be four blocks high to make him crack. Then we each tried our own egg on our own wall.
  • We tried putting eggs in Ziploc bags with different contents to see if it would still crack or not. We tried unifix cubes, play-doh, foam shapes, paper shreds, rocks, and just plain air.
  • Using ten legos we designed houses that were as tall as we could get them, as short as we could get them, and as interesting as we could get them.

SPECIAL NEWS:

  • We survived this very rainy week … and are hoping for sunny days ahead!
  • We have had classes in Art and Music. We will being Guidance classes next week.

NOTES AND REMINDERS:

  • Snacks next week will be provided by Emma, Eva, Jackson, Jaharelle, and Logan.
  • Please check your child’s folder each night and empty out unnecessary papers.
  • Library Day for our class is Wednesdays.
  • Field trip money is due next Friday, October 9.
