Creating the Magazine Part 2

ADOBE INDESIGN GUIDELINES:

STEP 1 - Setting up the document

BEFORE you set up the document size, go to Edit, Preferences, Unit – Increments, and change the Ruler Units for Horizontal to Inches & Vertical to Inches.

The settings for magazine layoutcannot exceed 8X10.5” in order to allow for margins & bleeding; which are important for the printing process as well as the mounting to the book format. If you choose to change the dimensions, do not exceed these numbers.

If you want to add or take away some of the rows go to Layout – Margins and Columns – change the columns to 1 if you want less or make the number larger if you want more columns.

STEP 2 – Setting up the Layers Palette

It is really important to stay organized when creating the different pages to your magazine. Color coding the Layers and keeping specific things on each layer will keep you very organized and less confusion later as the document begins to get larger.

Create 5 new layers and title them as:

  1. Master Items
  2. Text
  3. Captions
  4. Pictures
  5. Background

You will be required to have all of these items included in your magazine. Be sure that say for example you create any kind of type box you keep it on the type layer.

STEP 3 – Create your color scheme

Using Pinterest to find a color scheme that the group agrees upon, save the image to your Publication Folder.

  1. Create a temporary Rectangle Frame, using the Rectangle Frame Tool
  2. File – Place the image of the color scheme
  3. Use the Eyedropper Tool to select the colors
  4. Double click the swatch, add RGB Swatch to Swatch Palette, then Ok
  5. Repeat for each color you wish to save to the swatch palette
  6. Delete the temporary rectangle box with the color scheme in it
  7. Select all of the new swatches and in the upper right corner of the

swatch palette click on the button with the small triangle and 3 lines

  1. Click Swatch Options and change the colors to CMYK

STEP 4 – Creating the Page Numbers and a Running Footer

  1. Select the Master Page 1
  2. Create a text box at the bottom, select Type, and selectInsert Special Characters – Markers – Current Page Number
  3. Select the box with the letter “A” you just created, hold down the Alt Key and drag a copy over to the Master Page 2.

Interactive – Buttons and forms – you will see a pop up and you need to click on the options button in upper right hand corner (small triangle, 3 lines) and select sample buttons and forms.
