Colonial Acres Neighborhood Association

Executive Committee Meeting

January 10, 2006

Present:David Dwiggins, Glenda McNeal, Wanda Tabor

Tom Iverson has resigned as CANA Vice President. He is going to be working with a neighborhood organization that covers most of Memphis, rather than just Colonial Acres.

Kenneth Krog, in addition to heading the Membership Committee, has agreed to serve as Safety Committee chair. Two items he wished to communicate are: the East Precinct has a new commander, and the owner of the Quince Mini-Mart has reported two break-ins and one armed robbery, and would like to come speak at a CANA general meeting.

We need a storage area for surplused CANA items, such as old cell phones and yard signs. Purchase of new yard signs was approved at a prior general meeting. Volunteers are needed to place these signs in their yards, advertising when the next meeting is to be held.

Wanda proposed to re-adjust the timing of our general newsletter delivery. Instead of doing it during January and July, when the weather in Memphis is often at its worst, we will begin this year distributing the newsletter sometime after the spring and vernal equinoxes. Dwiggins wants to get a quarterly newsletter mailed out to paid members in February.

We need to update the Zone Contact information.

There is a new Council Commissioner election coming up in August.

Mr. Baker, owner of Baker’s Mattresses (formerly Baker’s Furniture) on Quince, has recently passed away. His obituary was in the Commercial Appeal, mentioning the work he has done in our community. An excerpt from his obituary will appear in the next newsletter.

A sparsely-attended abbreviated meeting was held. Apparently the phone-tree message delivery system has once again failed to alert members of the upcoming meeting. We briefly discussed the new newsletter delivery schedule and other upcoming events, including musical events being hosted by All Saints Episcopal Church.

General Meeting

February 16, 2006

There were 20-25 members in attendance, plus two guests.

Memphis Council member Carol Chumney is the new chair of the Public Safety Committee. She mentioned upcoming meetings with the Fire and Police Departments. She noted that 911 calls are the heaviest in the areas which also are the ones with the most reported Code Enforcement violations, once again supporting the view that Code Enforcement is an effective way to reduce crime rates. She also mentioned the City’s budget ratings, which are on a downhill trend. If the next ratings get any lower the city may no longer be able to generate revenue through selling bonds.

Dedrick Brittneum, Jr., is our new District 4 Councilman. He replaced Janet Hooks on 2 Nov 2005. He will be attending the Fairground Redevelopment Committee on 21 Feb 06 and report to the Council. He believes the City needs to pursue plans for aggressive business recruiting, in order to bring jobs and other revenue to the City.

Next Board Meeting:March 14, 2006

Next General Meeting: March 16, 2006

Respectfully Submitted,

D. P. Dwiggins
