CBC Guidelines

Columbus North High School

Facilitator: Nathan Schiefer

Room: 2414

Email:

The CBC program is designed for students who need to gain credit for various courses outside of the traditional classroom. These courses are done independently by the student at their own pace. This type of learning requires discipline and motivation to work on the course in their free time. It is a commitment that should not be taken lightly and a plan needs to be in place to accomplish the course in the timeline required. The following things are guidelines and information that students and parents need to understand prior to starting a CBC course:

·  Access to Plato (https://ple.platoweb.com/Account/SignIn) is the following form:

§  Account Login: “bcsc1”

§  Plato Name: firstnamelastname (Ex: johnsmith)

§  Password: firstname (Ex: john)

·  If you need more information about how to use Plato go to http://www.bcsc.k12.in.us/Page/10295 and look over the PowerPoint and then speak with me if you still need help.

·  There is a $80 fee for each semester course.

·  I cannot guarantee that I can help students with the content of the Plato course, my role is more of a facilitator to keep students working on the course.

·  Communication for this course will be done over email (parent and student) and texting.

·  My assigned period of the school day for facilitating CBC is 1st period. If you contact me by texting or email, please allow me until the next 1st period to reply (maximum 24 hours, unless weekend)

·  Students can acquire a 10 day pass to access computers during their scheduled resource in the Project Resource (2306) or the Group Resource (1314).

·  Although the course is online, it will be helpful for students to take notes while they learn the material. Any notes can be used on post-tests and the semester exam.

·  Modules can be completed outside of school, but post-tests and semester exams will be administered at school.

·  Students will be given 3 attempts at each post-test and one attempt at the semester exam.

·  All work must be completed by the end of the semester or the fee will have to be paid again.

How do I work through my course???

After you log on to the Plato website and start your course you will want to attack the course in the following way:

1.  Pre-Test – each unit will have a pretest that you should do first so that you are exempted from the material in that unit that you already know how to do. You will still be responsible for the exempted material on the post-test and the final.

2.  Tutorials – for those lessons that you are not exempted from, you are required to go through the tutorial that explains the material. It may be to your benefit to take notes as you do this.

3.  Mastery Tests – each lesson will have a mastery test that you must take to show that you have mastered the material that was taught in the tutorial. You must earn at least 60% on these mastery tests. You have 3 attempts that can be made on these mastery tests before they will lock you out. Please only start one if you have the time to finish it! If you are locked out, contact Mr. Schiefer or one of the other staff that can unlock it for you to attempt again. If you are not passing the mastery test that probably means you should go over the tutorial again before attempting it a second time.

4.  Post-Test – once you have earned mastery (60%) for each of the lessons in a unit, then you are ready to take the unit Post-test. This must be done at school or the McDowell lab! Please give me 24 hour notice as to when you are going to take the post-test. You must start this post-test in the first 5 minutes of the period during the day to have enough time to finish.

5.  Final Exam – once you have finished all of the unit post-tests then you are ready to take the semester final. Again this must be done at school!

ANYTHING THAT SAYS “OFFLINE ACTIVITY” DOESN’T NEED TO BE DONE UNLESS MR. SCHIEFER TELLS YOU TO DO IT! NO DISCUSSION BOARDS NEED TO BE DONE EITHER!

Who can unlock my Mastery Test, Post Test, or Final?

Mr. Schiefer is the primary contact for the CBC courses, but since he only has one period of the day assigned to working on CBC, there are other people that can assist him by unlocking tests. Here are the times of the day and who can help you during that period by unlocking tests.

McDowell Lab – open every Tuesday that school is in session from 3:30-5:30 starting Jan 13th. You can go there to work and they can also unlock tests if you’re ready for them.
